I realized that i have not introduced myself. I am Maddy, a soon to graduate Biology Major on a fast track program to Physical Therapy school even though I have no idea if I like it or not. I have gone through a lot of classes like Anatomy, Physiology, Genetics, Developmental Biology, and Biochemisty and got pretty good grades in them, but I still know nothing and can’t remember even more. One would think a die hard Ravenclaw would be a little better than this. Did I pay 46K a year to learn nothing? I guess so. Was it worth it? Probably.
But let’s get to the real question that none of you are asking. What the fuck is bicoid?
Bicoid is a material effect gene that creates a protein gradient important to development. It is mainly studied in the development of fruit fly embryo into larvae. The gradient helps determine what is going to be the tail end and what is going to be the head, the highest concentration being at the front of the fly.
Honestly, it was a running joke in my Developmental Biology class. It was 8am and we were all tired of reading about enzymes and genes and scientists fucking around with fruitflies. My professor would go on and on about bicoid when we were studying for his exams and we didn’t know the answer one of us would always say it was probably bicoid…. probably. It usually was.
