A lot of Danes complain about the inaccuracies in Marvel Thor and other american media representations of Norse gods, but the interesting thing is that Danish media has itâs own set of inaccuracies that come into play in our modern references to Norse gods, theyâre just very different. And yes, less glaring, because the general level of knowledge is significantly higher, but there very much is a Danish Pop-Norse Myth that is different from actual Norse Myth.Â
This is a few clips from a comedy show about the bible, the first scene in this video involves the Abrahamic god is in a support group with Thor and Buddha. Around 2:43, you have the dialogue:
Thor: Yeah, humans just need to be beaten with a hammer!
God: Yes! Humans need to be punished - without it, they donât comprehend a thing!
Group leader: But some humans need a bit of guidan-
Thor: WITH A HAMMER RIGHT IN THEIR FACE!
Thor is generally characterised as a bit of a dumb brute with a wild temper, which is... fine, I guess. But what directly contradicts lore is the idea that he wants to beat humans. Thor is specifically known as a defender of humanity.
And none of this is to suggest the inaccuracy is bad (after all, the characterisation of the Abrahamic god in this is also an inaccurate exaggerated take for humorâs sake) but itâs just interestign to me how our pop version of Thor differs so much from the Hollywood pop version of Thor.Â
