Marathon or longer #36 - State #16: 05/05/2018 - Prescott, Arizona: . Whiskey Row Marathon. This is a secret little hidden gem of a “road” marathon and I’m only telling you, no one else! Starting with a firing of a shotgun in between the city Courthouse and the historic Palace saloon (Arizona’s oldest frontier saloon and former watering hole to Doc Holliday and Wyatt and Virgil Earp) on Whiskey Row at 5,280 feet above sea level, which is about 5,250 feet higher than where I live, first 5 miles climbs on paved road before transitioning to primitive dirt road eventually topping out at 7,000 feet around mile 7. A nice long descent down to 5,600 is great until you realize you have to turn around and do it all again to complete the out and back course. . However, with less than 100 runners, over half of the race in the Prescott National Forest, surrounded by chirping wildlife, breathtaking panoramic vistas, almost 3,000 feet of gain and aid stations with trail food (chips, pickles and PBJ sandwiches!), this is actually an old school low key group run which is really a “trail” race in disguise! . So what’s missing from this race? I can’t believe there is no whiskey aid station at THE WHISKEY ROW MARATHON! I mean come on! The race is literally named after a street famous for being lined entirely with whiskey saloons! . Would I do it again (if I didn’t live so far away)? Definitely. But don’t tell anyone, because I don’t want the secret to get out about how incredible this race is! . Oh yeah, also less impressive when you realize there’s less than 100 runners, but I finished 27th and 2nd place male, 35-39 age group.
