this is! first of all, not part of the problem! in fact, it's one of the only arguments that we have no issue with as to why there "can't" have been any permadeaths next session. yes, Vampires is a short-run deathgame, but a permadeath in session 3 would be pretty damn early!
...depending on the deathgame!
our response here is not "debunking" the claim that a session 3 permadeath is an early one. one must imagine us starry-eyed and excited to compare different deathgame stats to each other.
in the Traffic/Life series, a permadeath at session 3 is practically unheard of, yes. we'd wager that's the metric most people are familiar with. 3L took a while to get its first permadeath and ran for somewhere between 7 to 12 episodes depending on which creator you watched. the shortest Life season, Double Life, clocked in at 6 sessions in total.
in other deathgames though, things look very different! the simplest example would be the last series from Legundos, Season 2 of Naked & Afraid SMP -- though it's a collaborative deathgame, it's also brutal mechanically. N&A2 ran for 8 sessions total like the majority of Life series do, but (in a series with 20 players, several of whom are Lifesteal members) its session 3 was the only one without a permadeath, and had four permadeaths in the first session.
that's collaborative and mechanics-focused. what about competitive and a little more lore-focused? well, Bounty Hunters, a series featuring Musithical (Avid's producer and general musical partner-in-crime), clocks in at 5 sessions total, and that's a series with a fairly high life count. we didn't personally follow Bounty Hunters though, so we can't speak to when and how episodes were spaced out.
what we can speak to, however, is the last deathgame Legundo was in. Deceit SMP is a two-life hidden role deathgame that falls somewhere between Vampires and Third Life on a mechanical level. its second season seems to be pretty standard for a Life series, with what i'm guessing is a 8-session run and the first permadeath over halfway through the series.
the first season? six episodes from Legundo's POV. not sessions. episodes. two of these episodes are the same session split between events. one of them is a wrap-up episode of everyone discussing what the hell just happened, because season 1 of Deceit SMP was four sessions long. we cannot in good conscience spoil what happens during its episode 3, because Deceit S1 holds a very special place in our heart, but suffice it to say that it is not bloodless.
in conclusion: there is no conclusion to this! is session 3 of Vampires too early for a permadeath? the verdict is still out! how short is a short-run deathgame supposed to be, anyway? time may only tell! did we miss a deathgame from one of the other Vampires members that would change these stats significantly? get at us in the comments!
(you should totally watch Deceit SMP if you want to see Legundo in the torment nexus ASAP, by the way. if there is any hidden agenda to this post, it's getting people to watch Musi in Bounty Hunters and basically anyone's S1 of Deceit.)
