In 2016, we no longer needed to turn on the TV to see pretty girls get drunk and fight, nor did we need to go to the TV and see how these pretty girls live their lives thanks to social media. However, Oxygen did not realize this and instead chose to cultivate a group of girls that had sizable social media followings.

I believe the goal was to have their built in audience tune into the show and revive the show's consistently falling numbers. This did not work as season 16 performed worse than season 15, continuing the show's decline.

This season still had some good moments, but a few things spoiled it, like transition scenes showing the girls browsing their phones and the weird sexual coercion arc that was portrayed as a romance between Kandyce and Bynesha. That's a throughline by the way, BGC loves ignoring obvious sexual harassment.
