hellspawn plot bunny, free to a good home: astarion and post-upgrade!karlach are sharing a bedroll one night when astarion wakes up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep. something's on his mind, troubling him. he sees karlach is still asleep and decides to very quietly confide to her sleeping form whatever it is that's eating at him. if this is angst, maybe he's just had a nightmare about something cazador did to him and is now quietly telling her what happened. if it's fluff, he's confessing his feelings about her, how he never imagined he'd come to care for her so much and how he has no idea what to do with those feelings or what they mean. either way, he quietly says his piece and, feeling relieved to have unburdened himself thusly without any of the actual messy vulnerability to his sleeping partner, curls up in her arms and falls back asleep once more...
except karlach wasn't actually asleep. for any of it. she'd woken up at about the same time as astarion, heard him confessing while she was "asleep," and has consequently been lying there keeping up the act while fighting desperately not to let her rapidly rising temperature give her away :`)
(once she's sure astarion is well and truly asleep again, she squeezes him just a little tighter before letting herself drift off as well...)
