I just woke up to a message that iâm nominated in the gif category of the bffa and iâm literally sdfkjfkfjfg rn so idk who did that but thank you??? the nomination itâself is literally the sweetest thing on the planet. Â
Hii. um I kinda have a question. I know you have a hand in most, if not all, the Riverdale Events and I was just wondering if you and the other creators of these events have had a thought of doing something like the Bughead Awards but for the Serpents? If not that's fine, I know how busy you all are with the other events you Create.
Hey there, nonny! Sending đđ your way. Iâm sorry for the late response! I wanted to give it a thought out and honest answer, because itâs a multifaceted one. It is true, @bettysnooper, @jughead-jones, and I are the ones behind a lot of events. There are some we arenât involved in and some only one or two of us are. @bettysnooper and I, especially, like to keep our Riverdale plate overfull. Sometimes that plate is so full that our other plates get knocked off the table of our lives. When @bettysnooper labeled her blog with fandom cruise director, she wasnât kidding (haha). With all that, weâve tried to take on some Serpent exclusive stuff in the past. Now, this answer is going to be very in-depth and long. I want to give it the sort of thorough and frank answer it deserves. If youâre interested in knowing more, itâll be under the cut.
@jughead-jones and I had seriously thought about doing an overall Riverdale Awards that had a section for the Serpents, Varchie, Parentdale, etc, etc, and so on and so forth a while back. Unfortunately, as it would be a rather large undertaking, our best plans fell to the wayside and it never got off the ground. Since that time sheâs taken a huge part in other fandoms as well as this one, joining an insane number of source blogs and communities and becoming the gif queen we know and love. As such, she has taken on a role that is active when we need her (she is a gem with doing headers and helping us brainstorm when we need her) but a supporting one to @bettysnooper and I during other times.Â
That being said, one of the factors here is that the Bughead Fanfiction Awards in particular take @bettysnooper and I a huge amount of time â particularly in the nomination eligibility checks phase. Doing something like that across all of fandom where we donât have a full range of knowledge and familiarity would be incredibly difficult, not to mention stressful. In the Serpent section in particular, so many of the fics are exclusively on Tumblr. I donât even know where weâd start. I think given the depth of content that we arenât familiar with and our overall time commitments being allocated to Riverdale fandom wide events, it would be unwise for us to try to juggle in a Serpent Awards or a Riverdale Awards. Honestly, we push ourselves way too far sometimes and donât give our mental health proper care.
Furthermore, Iâve got to be frank, we havenât had much luck in our endeavors with Serpent fandom exclusive stuff, despite our best efforts. We have put on a Serpent/Southside exclusive event with @riverdale-events Southside Showcase. Unfortunately, this year it got very little participation from the Serpent section of fandom. We made sure to include OCâs, reader inserts, all the Serpents, we really put a lot of thought into planning it and a lot of effort into managing to schedule it into the year of events. There were definitely a few people who took part! They are awesome and they know who they are! But it didnât seem like there was much of an interest from that corner of fandom as a whole. Itâs actually the event we have had the lowest participation in, by far, in the history of running the events.Â
Weâve noticed the same thing with the @serpentcentral blog. We really love the Serpent characters and the content that the creators in that fandom make, so we set out to make a source blog exclusively for those fans (who we really enjoy and are so damn talented!) We put out content from the blog and we reblog (what posts we can find) content created by and for the Serpent side of fandom, including OCâs. However, the #serpentcentral tag next to never gets used by that part of the fandom.
Given those things, I really donât think that us doing a Serpent Awards would end up getting the participation required, even if we could put in the time. The terribly low participation in Southside Showcase and the lack of utilization of serpentcentral has been really discouraging. I know there are people in the Serpent fandom who HAVE been amazingly supportive and participatory (you all know who you are!!). I canât say enough how much we adore and appreciate those individuals. They are the reason I got so invested in the Serpent characters â their talent and passion is inspiring. It definitely seems like you, nonny, would fall into that group of people. Your ask was very kind, thoughtful, and understanding. In return, I wanted to give it a full and respectful answer.
SO, all that being said, we would 500% be up for sponsoring a Serpent Awards event if anyone wants to put one on. We could make sure that it gets reblogged to our source blogs (of which there are a number) regularly and weâd help promote it. We would would be up for giving whoever ran it our general google doc/spreadsheet framework for how we run an awards session as well as advising on google forms and initial tumblr event posts and such. We think it would be GREAT if there was a Serpent Awards, and we would be more than happy to lend our aid in the above ways, but running something like that ourselves just isnât something that we are up for adding to our plates right now. If you, or anyone else, is seriously interested in running those awards (and weâd suggest at least a two person team as well as a person willing to make graphics), please, definitely hit us up! We would help how we can and cheer you on.
Thank you for your ask, nonny, and thank you for being respectful, kind, and understanding. For anyone who has made it this far, we hope you understand our position. We look forward to seeing what is to come for the Serpent community and will be hanging out with our cheerleader pom poms, shaking them for the creators. Cheers! XOÂ
