You knew Kun knew something was off.
He knew it when you ate a whole plate of lasagne with a veggie salad and French fries on the side, a scoop of triple chocolate ice cream and a bar of chocolate the day before. He knew it when you tossed and turned in bed all night, not being able to sleep. He knew it from the way you dragged yourself to the bathroom in the morning, hands over your stomach, your face is puffy – and it wasn’t because of crying. He knew it when you cursed under your breath when you came out of the bathroom.
Yet, you tried to play it cool and brush off his attentive questions. You persisted that you were totally okay and that he couldn’t do anything to help you anyway. You were a tough, badass amazon, not some whiny little mochi who would throw a tantrum at the first subtle sign of PMS (although you felt the urge to throw a tantrum, not knowing the reason, you just wanted to yell at somebody… or punch someone in the face… both sounded awesome).
However, after eating a whole lot of chocolate waffles in the morning (with more chocolate sauce on top), your stomach already displaying the pregnant belly effect, you couldn’t keep it a secret anymore; you knew you had to tell him the truth. You were supposed to go on a movie date before noon and then have lunch together somewhere around the cinema, but your cramps were so horrible that you didn’t feel like leaving a house. You didn’t even feel like moving your pinkie finger. You wanted to lay down all day and sleep. Knowing that your sleeping schedule was messed up anyway when it was that time of the month, you knew it wouldn’t happen, but hope was the only thing that prevented you from having a mental breakdown at times like this.
“Honey!” you cooed a pitch higher than usual as you made your way to the living room where Kun was reading a magazine. Your boyfriend looked up with his sparkly, caramel-brown eyes and gave you the sweetest, most reassuring smile ever that could turn your legs into jelly in a matter of seconds.
“Yes?” he hummed, indicating that he was listening to you. You started playing with the hem of your old-worn Disney pyjamas (the one that you got from him for Christmas), not knowing how to confess him. It wasn’t like he was uncomfortable around the topic. He was aware of women’s struggles, but you usually didn’t show any sign of weakness when it came to your period. However, your PMS was acting up more than usual and you realized there was no point in hiding your pain anymore.
“Do you think we can postpone the movie date?” you suggested with a forced smile, hoping that it would work on him. You should have known better that Kun wouldn’t let it slide.
“Of course.” He nodded right away, his gentle, soothing voice laced with worry. “What’s wrong? Are you feeling sick?” He squinted his eyes as if he was looking for any possible injuries and immediately rose from his sitting position. He was a bit taller than you like this than you, but you never minded being the small one until you could put your head on his shoulder when you wanted to.
“It’s just that I’m on my period and I don’t feel like leaving the flat. I have cramps and my stomach and face are both bloated, so I’ve thought we could just stay here and watch a movie here instead,” you confessed a bit coyly, feeling more vulnerable than usual.
You were afraid that Kun would take it to heart but the affectionate smile of his immediately put your mind at ease.
“That sounds lovely,” he gave in, reaching for your hand to squeeze it gently. You were so touched by his reaction, you didn’t think that he would be so supportive even though you knew Qian Kun was literally an angel sent from Heaven. “Is there anything I can do for you?” he inquired, his almond-shaped eyes shining with fondness. If you had been a bit more emotional, you would have given him a big bear hug right away but luckily mood swings were out of the question this time.
“No, thank you. It’s enough for me that you’ll stay with me.”
“I’ll look up some recipes that may help to ease your pain and then I’ll cook something for lunch, okay?” Kun suggested with a proud grin.
“That would be awesome. Thank you!” You gave him a thankful smile in return and intertwined your fingers with his delicate ones. His skin was always so smooth, it was similar to a baby’s skin – soft and squishy. You couldn’t help but blush a bit when you held his hands. It may have been a small gesture of love but you sure loved holding hands with his.
“Ah, don’t thank me. I just want you to feel better.” He gave another squeeze of your hand before he retreated to his own room to look for some recipes while you plopped down on the couch in the living room, turning on the tv and watching an episode of a recent Korean drama. You were pretty sure you hadn’t seen any episode of that particular show, yet you couldn’t care less. You needed something to distract you from the fervent monster in your stomach that was kicking your stomach walls from the inside.
Fifteen minutes passed by and you got yourself a heating pad and a pillow – one for your stomach, one to grab (and sometimes punch) while you were waiting for the second male lead to confess to the girl. During this time, you heard Kun talking to himself – something that he always did when he was doing something he put his whole heart into – and you assumed he was hesitating which meal to make. In the end, he spent another fifteen minute or so searching for the right recipe before he scurried out of his room, exclaiming that he found the perfect soup for menstrual cramps.
The next two hours were spent with you watching the Korean drama’s double episodes and going to the bathroom whenever you felt the urgent need to pee while Kun was preparing lunch for both of you. Judging by the smells that filled the living room, you were pretty sure the food would taste amazing, so you weren’t surprised when you sat down to eat his broccoli and barley soup because it tasted just right.
“Oh my gosh, it’s so good, Kun! I love it! It’s so delicious,” you complimented him wholeheartedly after the first taste. He must have put some mysterious Chinese herbs in the liquid because you were pretty sure you hadn’t tasted anything like this before even though he was the one who cooked for you two.
It wasn’t that you hated cooking, in fact you loved spending time in the kitchen, yet Kun was more skilled and more enthusiastic when it came to preparing meals, so it was either only him cooking or him with your assistance.
“I’m glad you like it,” he commented with that satisfied smile of his that he always had when you were eating well, and it was his food that you were eating. He was full of affectionate and care and cooking was another way he could show just how much he cared about you.
Needless to say, after finishing a bowl of the soup, you helped yourself to another serving. However, after finishing the second bowl, your stomach was still craving for more but something sweet instead.
“Are you full, dear?” Kun raised an eyebrow in question as he looked at your second finished bowl.
“Well…” You chuckled nervously, knowing that the typical menstrual full-but-still-could-eat-more feeling was something he would never experience. “Yeah, I just want some chocolate.”
“You’re lucky you had a boyfriend who can read your mind because I’ve also prepared some chocolate chip cookies,” he announced excitedly, clapping his hands like he was about to present something in front of middle school children. You could swore that you smelled something chocolate-y while you were watching that drama and you assumed that he was working on something other than the soup because he spent more than two hours in the kitchen.
Nonetheless, you were just as happy as he was when he put a tray of cookies on the table. You gulped as you looked at those gorgeous chocolate chip cookies and you knew too well those wouldn’t stay untouched for long.
“Oh gosh, I love you!” You beamed idly, almost tearing up at the gorgeous treats.
“Are you saying it to the cookies or me?” Kun teased you with a childish giggle that could make you swoon. He was the sweetest human being on Earth and you had a hard time believing you were so lucky that you could call him your boyfriend.
“Both.” You laughed out loud. “I love you and I love the cookies, but I love the cookies only because you were the one who made them,” you added cheekily, earning a content grin from him. Gosh, the way his eyes sparkled when he was satisfied!
You were sure that it was way better than going on a movie date no matter how much you dreaded telling him about your cramps.
“I love you too.” He looked at you lovingly, reaching for your hand to interlace your fingers. You looked back at him, your insides bursting of love and gracefulness, making you more emotional than you intended to be. This time, you knew it wasn’t just because of your PMS.
Having a boyfriend like Qian Kun made you feel lucky and thankful every single day you spent together with him.
