Dereck Joubert is an award-winning wildlife filmmaker and National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence, who has been filming, researching and exploring in Africa for over 30 years with his wife, Beverly Joubert. Their mission is to save the wild places of Africa and to protect the creatures that depend on them. Screened their incredible director’s cut of the documentary Okavango: River of Dreams and it is the most beautifully shot film I have ever seen on Africa. During the four years it took to capture the footage, these two were up at 4am every morning and there is a sequence where a lion attacked a water buffalo calf and was gored by the mother. Dereck was attacked by the same water buffalo and Beverly was gored from under her left arm, through her shoulder. To recreate her face, she has 48 steel plates in her neck and face.
