“UBU REX” (Berliner Ensemble + Abattoir Fermé)
MERDRE!
The fascinating and mostly true story of the mad bad king UBU... who started out by being nothing more than a mere maggot in the eyes of the one god and how he learned to eat with cutlery, dress in a more or less decent although very unfashionable way and talk by using words consisting of no more than two syllables to finally rise up, challenge various heads of state and by means of bullying, drive those same heads of state off their thrones and if, by the one god, that would not work, then kill them just the same, take their treasures, land, wives, children, gummy bears and then rise to fame and fortune, becoming emperor of the world, his majesty -nay- his excellence UBU REX post lux tenebras indulging in riches, sleeping late every day, doing whatever he damn pleases, he might even get himself a proper wife and children and mistress and even more children, he will arrange ceremonial events to cut ribbons, stand on the balcony to speech to the common people, Merdre, he will say, all bow to King Ubu for those that will not bow, I will make them and for those that cannot: I will eat them and eat them and eat them and mad bad Ubu will be the biggest animal on the planet and finally there is nothing left to devour, to possess but oneself and so he does and what goes all the way in must come out.
MERDRE!
