Ever wondered about the cost of bought vs homemade almond milk? The price of raw almonds in my community ranges from $20 pkg for cheap supermarket almonds through to $36 pkg for organic and other options in between. If using 1 cup of almonds (150g) to make a litre of milk it will cost $3 - $5.40 based on the above almonds. Stretch it out by adding more water to make 1.5 litres per 1 cup and the cost range reduces to $2 - $3.60 A litre of almond milk bought commercially ranges $2.40 to $6.40 in tetra packs. The uppermost costs reflects the use of organic and activated (soaked first) almonds. Therefore head to head its a similar cost or cheaper to make it yourself with comparable quality almonds - this is by volume of milk though. Bear in mind commercial nut milks can contain as little as 2% nuts!!!! Not to mention additives such as gums, synthetic vanilla flavours, vegetable oil and sweeteners. Plus the tetra packs that are lined with plastic and the milk itself superheated so it can be in long life containers.
