If you're sitting down for a long, (hopefully) uninterrupted writing session, what's your ideal environment? Where/what time do you work best? Music or no? Snacks/drinks? Paint me a picture (but only if you want to, lol).
Uninterrupted writing time, my beloved. <3
First things first: take the dog for a walk and/or take a shower. It gets the writing juices flowing and gets me excited to sit down and type.
Often, I'll also do a quick tidy-up or a chore that needs doing (10-15 minutes) because it helps me feel more relaxed about my environment and less distracted by thoughts of what I "should" be doing instead of writing.
Then I can finally sit down to write.
While I frequently write on the couch or at the kitchen island, I do have a desk in the craft/storage/office room, so that's where I set up for a serious session. I tend to be most productive right in the middle of the day, so that's the best time if I can.
Painting a picture... I am a short king, so I have a foot rest under my desk lmao. l am also a bisexual who can't sit normally, so a lot of the time one or both feet are tucked up on the seat with me, or I'm trying to write with my feet propped on the desk, or sitting in my chair sideways. The dog will be sleeping somewhere in the room, often right behind me so I can trip over her whenever I get up. :)
Drinks and snacks for SURE, but not stockpiled on the desk. I have to get up periodically for chronic pain reasons, but it's just good to stretch and move anyway. It's a good chance to mull things over for a minute, and that's the perfect time to top up my coffee, grab a beer, or get some yogurt or chocolate or something. (So, at any given moment during this writing session, I probably have a bottle of water, some other drink, and an empty wrapper of the most recent snack sitting on the desk.)
I find it hard to write with music that has lyrics, unless there's a specific song that's exactly the vibe I'm trying to hit. I have some composers and instrumental playlists that I like, but I usually listen to movie/TV soundtracks or the Ambient Worlds videos on Youtube because they're more unobtrusive. I am just wrapping up a bang fic that will release in September where I was listening to "The Leftovers" soundtrack on repeat a lot.
I feel like this is very boring. XD How about the rest of you? Do you guys do anything unhinged as part of your creative process?
