I'm going back to a full Atkins Induction round of Keto for a while. Meaning, I'm going to cut back on nuts and seeds and nut butters. I'm relying on these too much when I get hungry as a quick food. There are two downfalls to this - one, nuts and seeds can get pretty expensive in the carbs area fast, and two, the protein amount is not high. What I'm realizing is that when I eat enough protein at a particular meal, for me and my small stature this is around 12 to 15 grams, I feel a lot less hungry and less prone to snacking - on more nuts! Pecans, my favorite, are about 4 grams of carbs for only 3 grams of protein. Not enough protein to feel full but enough carbs in a single sitting to be done. Cutting out these quick grabs means more prep time for meals, especially getting ready for a day of bringing food to the office, but worth it.
Why the change up? I'm not gaining weight but I'm not losing at a decent rate either. Only about a half a pound about every two weeks. I can do better than that! My ketones are fine but not great. They are hanging out in the 1.0 Â to 1.7 mmol/L range. I'd prefer to see them in the 1.7 to 2.4 range. But still my B-OHB is in the ketosis range so it's okay. My fasting blood glucose level is worrying me though. It's been in the upper 80s. My goal is to get it consistently back down to the low to mid 70s as it was in January and February before I took my little holiday from keto. Mid 80s is creeping too close to the 90s range which I consider to be the FBG for Metabolic Syndrome issues. Last week at work there was a health fair and my BP checked in again at pre-hypertensive with 132/90. And hello - I surely don't want those awful migraines to start coming back!! So Pecans and Peanut Butter, you are moving to the back of the shelf!Â
