Another Year End List, yes, this one being my favorite novels read in 2017. Curiously, these are all old books—let’s hear it for old books! 1. THE SUN ALSO RISES by Ernie Hemingway (1922): I disliked this when I first read it about 10 years ago. This time I TOTALLY GOT IT and it's all good, so very very good. Best passage: "Brett was damned good-looking. She wore a slip-over jersey sweater and a tweed skirt, and her hair was brushed back like a boy's. She started all that." 2. LADIES' MAN by Richard Price (1978): the sorry-ass state of masculinity in the late 20th century perfectly captured in tough prose with razor-sharp dialogue. 3. STONER by John Williams (1965): sublime rags-to-not-riches portrait of an academic. 4. THE EASTER PARADE by Richard Yates (1976): a devastating study of human loneliness, reading it hurt so good. So good that I've started working my way through Yates' backlog (currently rereading his (other) masterpiece REVOLUTIONARY ROAD). What I've learned in 2017? I've learned to let go of the things that were beyond my control. I've learned that when you lose something, there's always a reason behind it. Even though it might have caused you terrible pain at that moment, things would get better eventually. As long as you don't lose your faith in yourself, you can put back the broken pieces of your life and start over again. Never lose that spark within you that made you the best version of yourself. I've learned that in order to see past the veil of uncertainty of the future, you have to embrace everything that made you blind in the past. I'm thankful for all that transpired in 2017. 2017 ends today! And this was a heck of a year. Some tough things happened personally, a lot of tough things happened for a lot of people globally, but when I look back on this year I want to keep focus on the good 💖 So this year’s nine selfies capture my highlights of the year! Row 1: starting the year with the Women’s March 2017, dying my hair silver, and going to Wanderlust in SF! Row 2: Heading to The Chainsmokers concert, Seattle weekend, and baby sister’s visit for her 21st birthday! Row 3: Travel (duh!)! Snorkeling in Maui, heading to the Sedlec Ossuary (bone church!) near Prague, and doing our best to stay warm in Iceland by Godafoss. Thank you to everyone who made 2017 awesome.
