PICK ’N’ MIX
I don’t read nearly as much as I’d like to. And I certainly haven’t got through all of the classics. But, when I do get the chance to open a book, I feel the need to take ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING on board. Remember every word. Every saying. Every image. This is because I’m ridiculous. Unless you have a photographic memory, like Stephen Fry, you’re setting yourself up for a fall.
And, here’s another thing: if you read one book that says ‘think small’, the next one is bound to tell you to ‘think big’. Everyone is different and their opinions differ along with them.
So, this may seem obvious, but it’s taken me a while to grasp: take what works for you. That’s not to say you can’t challenge yourself, expand your mind or alter your thinking, but not everything that one person says is gospel. You may like a third of what they say, or just a twentieth, perhaps just one word. But take that nugget of knowledge and add it to your bank, along with the other nuggets you’ve garnered from other great minds that you admire (maybe even ones you don’t admire, but can’t deny they have a point on a particular subject).
Take a bit from everyone.
You don’t have to follow all the rules.
Pick ’n’ mix.
