#16 (rain kiss)
It was well past two in the morning and, having just been kicked out of a dive bar, the pair decided to start heading back to campus. He could only imagine what they looked like to the gaggles of drunken teens they passed along the sidewalk. Dahlia without her shoes, red wine stain down her entire front, Ronan with blood dripping from his nose, shirtless with Dahliaâs jacket draped over his shoulders like a cape. They looked like chaos, but he felt more at peace than he had in a very long time. The were taking turns sharing the stories behind their various scars when the sky began rumbling above them. Ronan looked up just in time for a fat raindrop to splat on his forehead. Seconds later the downpour launched. The two slowed to a stop, their hands still clasped, basking in the sudden weather change. He estimated they had about fifteen minutes before they were drenched and the rain became less serene and more of a nuisance. That should have kicked him into geer; powered him to walk faster so they could get back to Hendrix before the worst of the storm. Instead he turned his head to the left where he could still hear French music drifting out of an all night cafĂ©, and then right to look at Dahlia. âMrs. Norris,â he recounted the humorous alias theyâd chosen for scamming restaurants into giving them free desserts for their âanniversary,â âwould you grace me with a dance?â He released her hand to give an exaggerated bowâwhen he looked back up the smile on her face nearly knocked him onto the ground. It felt like somebody had kicked him in the chest. Before he could catch his breath, she was in his arms. They swayed, and dipped, and spun, and shivered, and laughed. He vaguely registered that an older woman with an apron tied around her waist was watching them from the French cafĂ©âwhose door was now propped open so the music battled with the rain. The metal from the cheap ring theyâd picked up at a pawn shop was cold against his skin as she slid her hand up his neck. Her finger was already turning a light green before the rain began, so, by the time he dropped her off at her dorm room, he was sure it would look totally rusted. He wondered if sheâd keep it anyway. Wrapping an arm around her waist, he twirled them. Water was dripping from his hair, his fingers feeling numb from the cold, but still he wanted to keep dancing. It was only the thought that she must be losing sensation in her exposed feet that compelled him to bring the moment to an end. They stood entangled, their noses brushing as their giggles died down. Tilting his head down the tiniest fraction, he placed a feather light kiss against the corner of her mouth. âAlright, letâs get you home before your toes fall off,â he croaked, pulling back. Picking up her jacket that had fallen from his shoulders onto the ground, he tied it around his waist and then gestured for her to climb on his back. They continued on the path home, resuming their conversation with the ease of people who had known each other for a lifetime.Â

âI donât think I did it right,â he slurred staring down at his attempt at a French braid. Turning to the iPad beside him on the couch, he pulled the article back up, trying to figure out where he went wrong. The words were blurred, giving him a headache as he fruitlessly tried to force them into focus. He couldnât quite recall how they ended up in this position--Dahlia sat on the floor between his legs as he hovered above her braiding her hair--but he was feeling a lot of regret and frustration. Leaning forward, he took a look at her from the side. The rust colored braid was flawless until about two thirds of the way down her scalp where bits of hair unexplainably started drooping and poking out. He tucked two escaped strands back in before getting distracted by her profile. Since their first meeting, sheâd become a fixture in his life. He even frequently stopped by the bar just because he knew she was working. Heâd never done that before, visit somebody at work... but maybe that was just a testament to how few friends he had. âYou might be my favorite person,â he blurted, his forehead bushing against her temple as he swayed slightly. At first he was surprised by his own inebriated words, but after pondering it for a minute, he decided he was right. Being with Dahlia reminded him of something... Before he could pinpoint what it was, he was distracted again. The iPad he didnât recall shoving onto the floor, that they were using to listen to music, switched to Do Ya Think Iâm Sexy by Rod Stewart. âFuck it. Youâre just gonna have to rock the unkempt look, Doll.â Slipping an arm around her ribcage, he pulled them both into a standing position. He wasnât usually much for dancing, but, right now, he couldnât think of anything he wanted to do more. He wrapped both arms around her waist, keeping her back pressed against his front as they swayed back and forth. The easy way he laughed against her shoulder made him feel lighter than he had in ages.Â
