My Mother She Killed Me, My Father He Ate Me
This collection of 40 fairy tales by 40 authors was both tedious and rewarding. It took me a long time to read, because I felt like I was starting over every 10 or so pages, with a new writer and a new story. However, each story was roughly the length of my commute to babysit, so I found myself looking forward to train rides to read the next few pages of a fairytale.
However, of the 40 fairytales, I only really loved a few of them. The others were either disappointing (Michael Cunningham's 1 page fairytale) or excruciatingly painful (Hiromi Ito's I am Anjuhimeko and Joyelle McSweeney's The Warm Mouth).
The ones I loved though, made the overall read worthwhile. As for the others, at least I was exposed to different styles, different countries, and new fairy tales. The ones I loved were:
Aimee Bender's "The Color Master"
Alissa Nutting's "The Brother and the Bird"
Kevin Brockmeier's "A Day in the Life of Half of Rumpelstiltskin"
Shelley Jackson's "The Swan Brothers"
Katherine Vaz's "What the Conch Shell Sings When the Body is Gone"
Michael Martone's "A Bucket of Warm Spit"
He knows that it happens in this world that you can change in such a way as to never be complete, that you can lose parts of who you once were - and sometimes you'll get better, but sometimes you'll never be anything more than fractional: than who you once were, a few parts hollow. He knows that sometimes what's missing isn't somebody else.
