The Knight and the Little Girl extract • This short 26 pages long story was improvised in the course of a day, directly in the form of a story board and later illustrated. My objectives with this story was to approach sensitive topics such as gender, adulthood or acceptance of ones inner conflicts with an intuitive approach, namely by having two opposing characters, the Knight and the Little Girl engage in a long dialogue. The narration is reduced to its minimum, two panels per page, to reinforce the focus on what is being said and give a slow tempo to the story. The graphical style I developed for this story is entirely freehanded, not retouched on Photoshop and not sketched. That way, hesitations or imperfections remain visible. My aim is not to produce beautiful or aesthetically pleasing pictures but instead let emotions take over and complement the narration by giving a sensitive background to the text.
