However, these sarees have a history of it's own. Though the earliest mention of weaving of brocade dates back to 14th Century. However, it is likely that silk brocade weaving started in Banaras in the seventeenth century and developed in excellence during the 18th and 19th century when the weavers from Gujarat migrated during the famine of 1603. . . These traditional sarees involve a lot of hard work & skills. Each saree can take upto more than a month depending on the work it has. Primarily Banarasi saree is of four varieties, pure silk (Katan), Organza (Kora) with Zari and silk; Georgette, and Shattir. There are more than 1.2 million people in Varanasi and surrounding which thrive on the business of working on Banarasi saree. . . If you are in Varanasi, wathching a silk weaver should be in your to do list. It's fascinating to watch them work on these masterpieces which are sometimes the most prized possesions of an Indian household.
