Ben Ballinger - The State I'm In
From the first percussive moments of Ben Ballinger's latest album "The State I'm In" I knew I felt at home. The sweet, steady rhythm on the opening track "Natatorium" conjures up visions of accordion laced lullabies in a cozy dive bar somewhere off a Southwestern desert turnpike. I was instantly lost in the soft dust and tumble groove...a groove that transitions into the hippie cowboy waltz of the title track seamlessly. Ballinger sings "Good morning...good morning...good morning...every day I sleep with you is Saturday." ...I hear those lines and hell, man... I can see myself laying in bed with the girl of my dreams, and it's not the fact that I KNOW I will be at her side in less than twenty four hours. The picture has been painted.
Hell yes...this is dream music. Soundtrack ready if ever an album were. Ben's less is more approach to production and instrumentation really shines on the entire effort. Fans of the Avett Brothers or understated troubadours like Michael Knott and Jay Bennet will be inspired on the sidelines. Things get a little amped up on the expressive and brassy "Ashes to Ashes" which allows Ballinger to show off his inventive dark Tom Waits-like songwriting and powerful vocal range rocking the minor key. Sweet songs like "Flower Girl" and "Lucky You" and "Confessions in flannel" charm you with their pop-friendly melodies and lyrical honesty. Ballinger's jangly acoustic work, solid back beat and the occasional swoon of a steel guitar set a great mood tying the album together, all of the tracks that transition well into the Velvet Underground feel of "Radio"and the bluesy "One More Sad Song" - Man, if you can't smell the tubes getting hot now you haven't been listening close enough. This album is a slow burning, plodding masterpiece culminated in a loose clangy river of dobro clawing on the heartbroken closing number "Noah's Forecast".
This album is brilliantly understated and well done from start to finish. If you're a fan of moody, brooding alternative flavored folk, country and acoustic rock I highly recommend this album...if you prefer your music half drunk, in a dimly lit bar with your hero howling and mumbling in the corner...it's your album too. It's fine time the world gets to know Mr. Ben Ballinger. I for one am a happier man for hearing him.

Ben Ballinger – Natatorium
We stayed in touch.
My buddy Joe Salinas is making some rad videos with his series, Tales from the Carport. Im honored to be included in the series. Here’s what we did a few days ago. The song I play is called ‘Natatorium’. Its a new song and its the first track off my soon to be released EP: Ben Ballinger “Live at the Cactus Cafe" Hope you enjoy!
