❝Hey Yuri, have you gotten good sleep lately? I'm worried about you. . .❞
The brunette gently rubbed her sore eyes, dark circles pretty evident under them. She really looked horrible almost like she was on the verge of becoming a ghost herself. The usual soft skin looked more paler than normal and her lovely brown hair a bit messy.
"Not really..I haven't been able to sleep well not thanks to the recent ghosts we’ve run into. When I glance into their souls...I see how they died, and it reminds me too much of how I lost my family.”muttered the girl, as she slowly sat up. The camera Obscura sitting on her nearby desk. It had been a bit since the girl learned that a young boy’s soul was tied to the camera. It made her smile slightly when she recalled that day even if Data had been a bit moody when they first met.
“How are you doing? I know our last case you went falling unexpectedly into the water.”
Even if it was only for a mere second, Yuri felt so horrible about that it. Especially since Data Sora suffered pain even if even a tiny water droplet splashed onto the camera. It was because of how horrible she felt that the young girl had spent almost all night trying make sure the entire thing was dry. It caused an ache to form inside her chest when the girl could still vividly recall the young boys painful shout.
“It was my fault that you got hurt again..I wasn’t strong enough.” whispered Yuri, as she slowly picked up the camera. She held it close to her chest, the girls brown eyes staring up at Sora’s form. His red eyes looking back at her.
She knew the young boy would never blame her for such a mishap but her heart hurt knowing how much pain he went through. How hard it must be for him to be away from the person he loves most. To be stuck her with her. It reminded Yuri just how often those closest to her got hurt. First her own family, Hisoka, Miu and Ren. All of them had gotten hurt or worse because she wasn’t able to protect them.
Tears started to fall down the young girls face, as she made sure to hold camera away from any tear droplets. It hurt knowing just how many had suffered because of her inability to become stronger. How a part of her heart still lingered in darkness. After all, death would always follow her no matter where she went.
“All my life..people always told me that I was a burden. That everyone I loved would surely die because of me. After all, who could blame them..my entire family died in that accident while I’m still here.”
It would be a lie to say that Yuri had forgiven herself for what happened. The girl was broken and so many people told her that the very gift she could use to help save people was just some illness to be cured. For a time, she even started to believe that it was a passing thing but the ghosts always came back. It started become a routine that she hardly could sleep at night anymore.
“I wish I could rest...but Sora every time I shut my eyes all I see is my family..on that day. It will haunt me for the rest of my life. The guilt of being the sole survivor. I want to rest but..a part of me feels like I never will.”
It felt like Yuri might surely break down in absolute tears until she felt a back press into her own. Slowly she turned to see Sora holding onto the back of her shirt. A gentle look in those red eyes, the familiar scar on the side of his face.
‘Yuri, it’s okay. You know that’s why I’m here..to help you. Don’t shut me out..we’ve been through too much together. You are not a burden and there are people who are happy you exist.’
Why did he always know just what to say..to calm the storms inside her heart. It sometimes surprised her just how connected to the camera’s owner the spirit was. He could sense their feelings, fears. There were no secrets from him but with her gift she could also see the same with him. How much sorrow and pain existed underneath it all.
“Thank you Sora..” she muttered, as her eyes felt heavy and the brunette allowed herself to lay down. She felt Sora lay close by his hand holding onto her back. A comforting gesture, letting Yuri know that she was not alone. Not anymore.
