I live next door to a Joanne fabric, and I am considering picking up cross-stitch. What would you recommend for a beginner to get started with?
Basics?Aida cloth. 14 ct is probably best for a beginner.
Embroidery needles. Grab whichever ones catch your eye, don’t think too hard, you’ll figure out your preference eventually. My (Fry) preference happens to be gold plated in size 26, but you’ll get there.
6-strand cotton embroidery thread. DMC is the brand name we base our patterns on, but if you don’t mind exact colors, you can always grab one of those off-brand multipacks that Joanne’s has for friendship bracelet making. Those threads tend to snap easier at longer lengths, but you’re also getting a ton of them for cheap.
Some people swear by q-snaps, hoops and other devices to hold the fabric taught. I don’t use them, but if that feels like something you want, pick one up.
Scissors! You can use any you have lying around the house but I finally picked up some thread clippers and, let me tell you, what a world of difference. Not required for your first jaunt, but something nice.
Void, am I missing anything?
