The beetle fly apparently is a great go to fly in case you don’t have a flies that matches the prevailing hatch. Trout have a whole season to get used to seeing beetles and know them to be instant food with lots of calories. Easy to tie in the case of using foam and rubber legs so there is no excuse in not having any. As you can see there are endless varieties of beetle flies but you may notice that patterns such as the one with yellow foam cape or the red dot on the back are there for the angler to be able to pick out his small black beetle fly drifting along the tumbling and roiling surface of the water.
