The history of illustration
I have chosen the illustrators Eric Ravilious and Alexis Deacon. I picked Eric Ravilious out of the list because his watercolours especially midnight sun from 1940 appealed to me. It appealed to me because of the loneliness of the painting but also of the use of blue throughout the painting. I came across this painting on the tate website. I looked at all of the six works of art by Eric Ravilious on the tate website such as the submarines in a dry dock, shelling by night etc. They are not old fashioned but they are devoid of life. They convey a sense of another world to me and they are not painted in an impressionist style and they look almost airbrushed. Eric Ravilious was an English painter as well as a wood engraver and designer. He attended Eastbourne School of Art then the Royal College of Art. He found success as designer and produced designs for wedgewood including the coronation of King Edward VIII. In his career he completed over forty lithographic designs for publication. The technique for print making followed through to his paintings. He used simple shapes and hatching to convey shading. Eric Ravilious methods were with print making in mind that is why he chose to use simple lines within his drawings. I was attracted to the work of Alexis Deacon because of the use of colour within his illustrations but also the simple design of his animal drawings. In particular Beegu which is a children's book about a yellow rabbit like creature from outer space who wants to be accepted. Something that everyone wants, a sense of belonging. Beegu crash lands on earth and tries to find some help he meets a number of people who don't sccept him until he meets some children in the playground. In most of the illustrations throughout of the book I do get a sense that Beegu could be person moving to a big city all alone in the world. There is one illustration in particular thst makes my heart go out to little Beegu, it's where he is walking down the street with his ears down round him, trailing on the floor and he is usual colour of yellow but everyone else is the same grey and brown. This really does show the difference between Beegu and everyone else as he is so different and all alone in the world. Alexis Deacon studied illustration at the University of Brighton in 2001. He obtained a first clas honours degree. His first book published was slow loris followed by Beegu. Alexis technique to build his illustrations was to draw from life and do extensive sketchbooks using pencil and colour
