Police beef up security at stations nationwide to ward off IS threats

KUALA LUMPUR, April 14, 2015:

The police have amped up security around all its stations nationwide to ward off threats by Islamic State (IS) terrorists, The Star reports.

The English daily wrote that patrols at the authorities’ armouries were also increased, especially in light of a recent incident involving a man who threatened guards at an army camp in Gerik, Perak.

In the April 8 incident, a man in his early 30s with a thick Kelantanese accent drove up to the front gate of Markas Taktikal 749 in Banding.

He had reportedly told the sentries that he wanted to use the prayer room at the army camp and insisted on being allowed in despite repeatedly being told to move off.

According to the daily, the man was only allowed to perform his prayers near the sentry post and afterwards, appearing to have been angered by the rejection, threatened the sentries.

“You all better cleanse your own souls and stay inside the camp. Don’t come out,” he was quoted by The Star as saying.

The incident comes a day after Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that authorities believed police stations and military camps were targeted by IS militants who had plans to steal firearms.
