#becca.

while reese spent his time trying to impress their father,  callie spent her time trying to impress someone she never met  (  and never believed she would ever meet.  )  she was so invested in becca’s career ----  her mind was the most inspiring thing to callie,  it’s the very reason she was so invested in science herself.  she was a role model for her,  a safe place for callie to turn when her father’s training or ideals became too much for her.  she would always turn to studying becca when she needed to rest her mind away from all the conversations about second dawn.  

she saved all newspaper clippings,  magazine articles,  put them all over her room  ---  she watched every interview,  paid so much attention to everything she had done.  becca has always been such a big part of her life;  she wasn’t just an inspiration,  she wasn’t just her childhood hero  (  and absolutely her first big crush  )  but she was this person that cal could turn to when she needed to remember who she was too,  or who she could be.  she reminded her that she didn’t need to do everything her father had prepared her to do,  because she was allowed to be her own person and do her own things and be powerful all on her own,  without anyone else taking credit for it.  

becca is such an important symbol in cal’s life and she has been since she was a child.  that’s why it doesn’t feel like she’s just meeting her,  because she’s the best person cal has known all her life.  she wanted to be like her  ---  that’s why she dressed as her for halloween,  not just because she admired her,  but because she wanted to believe that someday,  she could change the world like becca had  (  that’s part of why it’s so important that she honor her wishes.  )  and the fact that becca told cal that she isn’t inadequate,  that she trusted her with so much,  and that she seemed to believe in cal too  ---  there is nothing more relieving and inspiring and encouraging to cal than that.

when becca came down and cal met her for the first time,  it was the first time she had genuinely been happy in those first 2 years in the bunker.  it was the first time she genuinely felt a sense of HOPE.  she had dedicated her life to saving a world that had been destroyed  ---  but here was her childhood hero,  literally falling from the sky,  here to tell her that she could go back to that world,  she could still save it.  she never needed to question the nightblood serum;  she believed in becca so effortlessly.  and there was finally an opposition to her father that made her feel SAFE,  not like she was being controlled like her father had made her feel there.

it’s so understandable that the flamekeeper’s job is such a sacred thing now  ---  because callie was the first flamekeeper;  she was the first person to promise becca she would do everything she could to make sure the flame got to the right people.  there is nothing more important to her than honoring becca  ---  so much so that she was willing to shoot her own brother to protect becca’s life work  (  though part of that was to save his life too,  in order to give him the nightblood,  because she believed in becca.  )  she was never invested in her father’s life work for the second dawn;  but she will die doing what he can to protect becca’s life work  ---  because it matters.  because becca brings HOPE,  she brings a real new beginning,  and she’s not letting that go to waste.

a lot of people are asking how the earthborn didn’t know about certain things that were revealed in this episode  ----  it’s because cal made it her life mission to protect becca’s work.  raven didn’t find the pages about the anomaly stone in becca’s book?  cal made sure no one ever would.  they didn’t find the stone in the bunker?  cal made sure they wouldn’t  (  though,  given that no one knew anything about it,  even if they did find it,  i’m sure they would have had the same reaction as callie did the first time she saw it  ---  ‘ a pointless ancient artifact.  ‘  )

You could jump in! It probably wouldn’t take too long to work out which NPCs are which. Although, I watched from the beginning because I had a lot of spare time to kill, so I’m not sure. I guess I’d recommend maybe catching them as they air and also catching up from the start in between live episodes?
