Recreating Ancestral African Hairstyles
@ooomarianne calls herself an “archaeologist of Black memory,” and her work shows why. The Senegalese-Congolese visual artist researches and recreates ancestral African hairstyles, using archival images and historic references to bring forgotten styles back into view. These styles were never just hair. They carried identity, culture, memory, and meaning across generations. Her work matters because when history tries to erase the details of who we were, recreating them becomes a way to remember, honor, and pass them on.
