āThere were 16 years between The Avalanches debut masterpiece, Since I Left You, and this follow up released in 2016. Iād love to be able to say it was worth the wait, but as fun and self-assured this is as a summery slightly psychedelic sample-based danceable album, they were probably best to have left Since I Left You where we found it as a one-off piece of musical genius. . Donāt get me wrong, this is in no way a bad album, itās even a very good album, but itās a bit like comparing Dylanās Shot Of Love with Blonde on Blonde. It arguably would have been a better album with less collaborations and guest vocalists, and if theyād stuck to their incredible selection of samples to provide the words and melodies. Though Jonathan Donahue from Mercury Rev does suit many of the more wispy psychedelic-lite tracks. . The song Frankie Sinatra, however, is full-blown brilliance and undisputedly the highlight here. Itās a funky calypso-infused beat with the catchiest chorus and rappers Danny Brown and MF Doom providing sharp street-cred to match the slick beats. . It is also one of the older tracks that they produced for the album which, for various personal and professional reasons, was mired in development quicksand for around 10 years, which Iām sure is the main reason the album lacks the brilliance and bite of their debut...ā .
