Do I tell her the dog is not comfortable what so ever and there are much better ways to train a dog to use a treadmill for the first time or....
Like seriously how does she make a living off being a shitty dog trainer???? She's literally just a trick dog competitor who went viral, married a balanced trainer and now calls her dog training the best for the dog....
If you can't see this dog is uncomfortable,
lip licking, stiff posture, ears to side, ears alert (trying to find an escape), stiff body posture, panting from stress not exercise, stiff mouth when closed and panting, hard stare
Why do you call your self a dog trainer....
The dog has not become more comfortable it's shutting down because it has non other fucking choice.
The next lesson the dog will shut down and mentally clock out again... then because you're doing this everytime, the dog might get used to it but only because there are no other choices. It's never going to like doing things on the treadmill. Not once has she reinforced the dog with anything positive.
Here is another dog she's trained to do this also who uses a series of body language saying she's uncomfortable
She is asking for a way out.
Shes not enjoying this.
Shes not showing him how its done.
Shes gaining attention with eye contact, then asking to get the fuck off this this with looking down, then looking back, then looking for the exit.
Just because this second dog has done this so many times, doesn't mean the activity is fun. What is the dog actually gaining from this exercise? Definitely not reinforcement. Just a history of reinforcement saying "if you do not stay on your treadmill you'll just get put back on and you have to stay here until I say so."
Please. See. The. Dogs. Aren't. Comfortable.
A BIG TIP NEVER EVER HOLD YOUR BIRD LIKE THIS. Just don't. And don't hold them by their wings. Ever. There's potential for tail feathers to snap and bleed which is extremely painful for the bird.
The appropriate way is to give your bird support. Wings tucked, feet gripping onto fingers and a stable neck, air sacks able to freely move for breathing.
Similar to this;
Although please note, if you're needing to hold your bird upside down the way av is - do so for only a very short time period!
Ok, I’m going to vent.
The gun control thing is a big thing for me.
I grew up in the state that had Australia’s worst (modern) massacre. I was 9 at the time and it was TERRIFYING. People from my home town (approx 3 hours away from Port Arthur by car, 30 minute flight) who worked in emergency services were sent down to help because all available southern based staff were already called in to the closest hospital.
The stories coming out were horrific. There is one story about two children and their mum that will haunt me to my dying day.
The main building most people were murdered in was torn down, and the shell was partly rebuilt (bullet holes are still visible in some of the brick work) in memorial.
We had gun control (under a conservative government) within 6 months.
Tasmania is a conservative state, majority of people who lived outside the two major cities owned semi automatic weapons for hunting.
We handed that shit in quick.
My heart breaks every time I hear of a school shooting in the US.
Seeing people in Florida telling news crews that “thoughts and prayers is no longer enough” makes me happy.
I get that R+L come from ultra conservative roots, and that things are extremely different in the US to here.
I just wish sometimes that they would step out and speak about stuff, because it does give comfort in some ways and in other ways it fuels the fires of reform and change.
Winston woke me up at 330am to pee because he hates the rain and didn't go usual time.
Had to coax him out with super high value treats so he would go which he eventually did but was very reluctant. Boy oh boy I've never heard a longer whiz in my life.
This is a little bit TMI but hey, where else can I vent this stuff about my beautiful sensitive princess who will never be an outside dog at home. Yet today at the Park he plonked in a muddy puddle. Go figure that out.

Hey! I was a heavily invested dog owner that wanted to learn as much about dog training as possible. I purchased certain trainer’s webinars and signed up to quite a few websites that were for trainers. I always received newsletters on tips for the business side of training and I know there’s quite a few webinars on the topic as well. Some websites I remember were RaisingCanine and doggonesafe. I found positive reinforcement trainers hard to find in my area even with different search words but luckily was told the name of one when I consulted a leader of a breed specific rescue group. They ended up being an amazing +r trainer. From an owners point of view, I really enjoyed the trainer having an automated scheduling system that emailed me confirmation of our session appointment. They also had info on their website that I appreciated as it prepped me to better understand the training that would have to occur for the specific behavior I was looking to change/replace. For sessions, they brought their computer and always did a sit down before and after the actual physical dog training portion to go over things and take notes then email me the “homework” or exercises we had just learned in the session. I also really loved how educational the trainer made it especially in the beginning. I bet it could feel tricky trying to communicate a bunch of necessary info to owners in the beginning, but I found that aspect to be worth 2x the amount I paid because it made the training way less complicated in the end. I felt empowered knowing and following hierarchy of needs chart, ensuring basic ones are truly met and bettering my dogs life in ways that didn’t involve training but ended up really helping change the behavior combined with the training. One thing I did struggle with was organizing and documenting the homework/training exercises. I was working with an adult dog with several triggers so I had to coordinate different exercises on different days. I found a few Etsy dog training templates that helped me organize as well as Kikopup’s packages that included a table to check off daily exercises. Then I just literally broke down each exercises into baby steps and put it on my phone to follow. Anyways, I hope any of this info helps and know I fully support you being a professional +r trainer! I’m a huge advocate for +r training as it transformed my relationship with my dog and animals in general. I look up to you for pursuing this! :)
Wow this is great, thankyou so much for sharing your experience and advocating for +r. Also inspiring me to keep going with helping owners the same way the trainer helped you and your dog out :)
We've been driving 20mins for our daily walk 1.5hr walk. Wins stress levels have dropped significantly despite his manic in car barking. He will walk passed dogs without reaction and if he does focuses right away. He won't bark at "big buff men" anymore. He willingly says hello to people (ran up a hill with some ladies yesterday and had fun). Its a semi rural setting with little to no triggers and its great.
I need to move out of the city. Not only for him but for me too. The only issue is employment which is next to none. But given the current climate i think it will change when I'm ready to move out in a few years perhaps.
Has anyone made the move from city life to country life? What were the struggles and gains of doing so?
Click to calm?
If a clicker is used as a training tool, it should meant the dog is engaged and ready to participate in interactions that involve learning. This often means the dog will be in a higher arousal state then normal, ready to focus and take in new information.
Emma Parsons book click to calm is aimed to help reactive dogs by rewarding for calming signals. Giving owners strategies to “calm, alter, and re-shape reactive displays”. While this is all well and dog, if a dog is put into a situation it needs to show those signals the dog is not ready to be there. Careful consideration of the dogs mental well being is to be understood in these situation and ideally CC & DS is a must.
If you are using a clicker as a calming cue, it’s not going to work as long as the clicker has been conditioner as a marked reinforcer. The dog will be excited and ready to learn not wanting to relax or loose focus. Therefore clickers should not be used when asking the dog for a calm and relaxed behaviour. In itself your reinforcer should be enough to not cause levels of arousal that will cause the dog to become excited. Perhaps a low value treat, verbal praise or physical touch (if the dog is ok with this) is enough to keep a dog in a relaxed mind frame. Understand this also will depend upon environmental factors that might contribute to arousal such as noise stimuli, sight, smell or a different environments. This would mean habituating your dog to making this place at home or within s new environment so they see it as neutral or to a point your dog will listen to you before seeing it as exciting, sparkly and new.
