#BlackLivesMatter is trending, and rightfully so, as the time for these conversations is long overdue. Yes, I said, “these conversations”. Black lives haven’t mattered for more than 400 years or since the first slave ship dropped us onto this soil. Those long treacherous only worked to intertwine Black lives with the American way of life, and it’s done so in a way that no part of our society is safe from the conversation about Black lives. Healthcare, education, pop culture, fashion, etc. All of it carries some entanglement with Black lives that must be discussed. What better time to do so than today and with Beats. It’s the story of the Black lives forgotten in the gun violence debates. Dismissed by the Right and tokenized by the Left, these lives only matter as numbers each so flippantly use in their debates about gun control. None of them mention the trauma, the damage, the exhausted caretakers, and the frustrated educators who are just a few of those Black lives touched when shots ring out in “the hood”. These lives matter and not just when the police are caught on video shooting unarmed Black men. Instead, they are forgotten and swept into the cracks of our society also matter.
