Reposting. Super big thanks to Colette Fu for the photograph. From the "Women Forward, Innovative Women" opening event at the Williamsburg Art & Historical Center. (and what a pleasure to be standing next to the wonderful Béatrice Coron and in front of gorgeous paper cuts.) On exhibit till April 7. #beatricecoron, @williamsburgartandhistoricalcenter, #colettefu https://www.instagram.com/p/Bu6sPtJlCCd/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1jr86tzinre9t

It’s back to school for NYC kids! Beatrice Coron’s “Bronx Literature” (2006) at Burke Avenue celebrates the rich literary heritage of the Bronx by portraying great writers including James Baldwin, Edgar Allen Poe, Sholem Aleichem and Nicholasa Mohr. The artist explains, "These authors tell the story of the borough from colonial times to suburban and contemporary community developments. Their works help us travel through time into different social classes and communities, making each of us an insider."Â
Wishing everyone a LOVELY long weekend!

In 2009 I took a two-week intensive class in papercutting with the incredible French American artist Beatrice Coron. When someone asked for rules on the process, she said "You don't need rules. There are no papercut police!" That class was a breakthrough time for me, my work got a lot less controlled, and that was the beginning of the movement lines which have pervaded my work ever since. She also made this papercut and I keep it over my desk to remind myself to be free in my art, and free in my mind. #beatricecoron #papercut #studio #penland
