Chapter X - Obsessive jealousy.

The day of the tour arrived beneath a suffocating summer sky. From early morning the parking lot behind the office pulsed with movement. Massive black buses stood lined up like sleeping beasts, engines rumbling low beneath layers of heat shimmering above the asphalt, vans loaded with equipment had already left hours earlier, leaving behind the lingering smell of gasoline, hot metal, rubber, cigarettes, and exhaustion. Crew members crossed between vehicles carrying cables, cases, coffees, half-finished conversations. Somewhere someone laughed too loudly, somewhere else music bled faintly from an open bus door. Everything felt restless, alive. In all that Nyx pulled into the parking lot slower than usual and for a moment she remained seated behind the wheel, her fingers tightening around it as she stared through the windshield at the chaos outside. Her bag rested on the passenger seat beside her. Packed carefully, but repacked three times during the night because sleep never fully came anymore before important things.
Tour.
Weeks away, crowds, peoples, no control... Her pulse already sat too high beneath her skin. Still, she forced herself out of the car. The heat hit immediately, wrapping around her body thick and heavy. She grabbed her bag, slinging it over her shoulder and paused beside one of the buses while mentally going through everything she'd packed.
Passport. Laptop. Medication. Chargers. Notebook. Phone.
Black onyx rested cool against her throat beneath her shirt. Instinctively, her fingers brushed it once. Grounding reflex. One breathe.
Everything's gonna be fine.
Then she saw them. Chris. And that girl... That same fucking girl. They was standing near one of the buses laughing softly while Chris leaned closer toward her. Comfortable, like he was doing it for long time. Her hand landed against his arm casually, intimate without effort. And suddenly the world split open beneath Nyx's feet. The sound around her dulled instantly, heat vanished, parking lot disappeared. All she could see was memory. Chris's voice, so fucking cold and cruel. And that humiliation clawing through her chest all over again while he looked at her like she was inconvenient. Replaceable. Difficult to love. The betrayal hit her body before thought could catch up, her lungs locked instant. - No⦠- she whispered automatically, but her vision blurred sharply.
God please, not now. Not here. Please, not here.
Her chest convulsed violently as panic crashed into her bloodstream like poison. Every heartbeat slammed painfully against her ribs, her hands started trembling so hard she nearly dropped her bag. The asphalt beneath her feet tilted sickeningly.
Too much noise. Too much air. Too little air.
She stumbled backward instinctively, desperate to escape before anyone saw her breaking apart. Her breathing turned shallow immediately. Sharp and painful.
Noah.
Where was Noah?
The thought struck through her panic with terrifying force. Because for the first time in weeks, he wasn't beside her. Not close enough to immediately anchor her and without him there, the world suddenly felt unbearably unsafe again. Nyx turned blindly between the parked buses, searching for darkness, for walls, for somewhere small enough to survive inside. She squeezed herself into a narrow space between two vehicles where shadows swallowed most of the sunlight. Cool metal pressed against her spine when her knees nearly buckled. The panic attack consumed her whole, taking her vision pulsed black around the edges. Her heart hammered so violently she could hear it inside her ears. Sweat gathered cold beneath her clothes despite the heat. Every inhale caught halfway like broken glass inside her lungs. She slid halfway down the side of the bus. - No, no, no... - she whispered shakily, digging her fingers desperately into the metal behind her. - Please, not now... - She thought she might faint, maybe part of her wanted to. Anything to stop feeling this. And then... - Iris. - Someone voice cut through the panic carefully. Almost steady. Grounded.
Folio.
Nyx lifted her head sharply, breathing still ragged. Nick stood at the entrance to the narrow space between buses and concern immediately flooding his expression the moment he truly saw her. Not the composed version of Nyx everyone else knew lately. This one was terrified, shaking and barely holding herself together. His face tightened instantly. - Oh fuck. - he said and he approached slowly to her, like someone who's trying not to frighten an injured animal further. - Hey. - he said softly, crouching down enough to reach her eye level. - Hey, look at me. You're okay. - Nyx tried to respond, but another wave of panic crashed through her chest before words could form. Her breathing broke apart completely. Nick's expression shifted immediately from concern to focus. - Okay. That's okay, Iris. - His voice lowered further, calmer somehow against the chaos consuming her. - Just stay with me for a second, alright? - He raised his hands slightly before touching her shoulder gently. The gesture was not trapping or controlling.
This touch said: I'm here for you. - Iris. I need you to breathe with me, okay? Slowly. - His voice cut through the noise inside her head piece by piece. - Look at me. - She tried. God, she tried. Nick inhaled slowly and exaggerated the movement so she could follow it. - In⦠- Nyx forced air painfully into her lungs. - That's it. - he whispered immediately. - Good girl. Again. Out. Another inhale. Another exhale. The world still spun violently, but Nick remained steady in front of her. A fixed point she could cling to while panic ripped through the rest of her. - You know I'm here, right? You're not alone. - he said quietly. - Nothing's happening to you right now. - Her fingers shook violently against the onyx necklace. Hot tears blurred her vision againts her wil. - I saw them⦠- she whispered brokenly, and Nick jaw tightened immediately. He didn't ask who she saw, because he already knew. And something dark flashed across his face before he buried it quickly. Because if Noah notices just how hurt Nyx still is by that guy⦠- Okay. - he said softly instead. - I know that was hard for you. - He wasn't dismissing, not even minimizing her fears. He just simple understanding it. Nyx squeezed her eyes shut hard as another tremor passed through her body. - I'm so sorry... - she whispered shakily. - I thought I was okay... - Hey. - Nick's voice sharpened gently. - Don't apologize for this. - The words hit harder than she expected, because Chris always made her apologize for pain. For her fear. For being affected at all. And here⦠Nick, even though he didn't have to, showed her⦠humanity. It was as if the fact that she was close to Noah meant the other guys would look out for her, too. Folio stayed kneeling beside her patiently while she struggled for breath. Never rushing her, never looking annoyed. His hand remained steady against her shoulder, grounding without restraining. And thanks to that... slowly, very slowly, the panic began loosening its claws. Not disappearing, but retreating enough for oxygen to finally reach her lungs again. - There you go. - Nick murmured quietly with a little smile once her breathing steadied slightly. - That's it. Stay with me. - Nyx looked at him through wet lashes, exhausted and embarrassed all at once. - I hate this... - she admitted weakly, and Nick expression softened immediately. - I know, Iris. - And he did know. Maybe not fully, maybe not the way Noah knew her darkness now, but enough to recognize pain when it stood trembling in front of him. He offered her his hand carefully to get her from void. - We can stay here longer, if you want. Or we can get out of here together. Your choice.
Choice. Mine. He give me time.
That thought alone settled strangely inside her chest, because it wasn't pessure. Or demand. It was just a choice. But HER choice. Nyx stared at his hand for a second before taking it slowly, and after that Nick helped her stand carefully, staying close when her legs wobbled beneath her weight. He didn't pull, didn't guide forcefully. He simply adjusted himself beside her so she had something solid nearby if she needed it. And only then did she realize how badly she missed Noah. The thought struck her suddenly, painfully, because Noah would've already known. One glance at her face and he would've understood instantly. Would've wrapped himself around her panic like violence around prey. Would've looked at Chris like something capable of murder. And horrifyingly, that thought comforted her. Nick led her carefully back toward the open space between the buses, where sunlight hurt her eyes at first. Her breathing still felt uneven, but she wasn't drowning anymore. Finally, Nyx looked up at him with exhausted, tear-filled eyes. - Thank you, Nick. - she whispered, and Folio smiled faintly despite the worry still visible across his face. - You never have to go through this shit alone, Iris. - Something inside her chest tightened painfully at that. Because for so long she had been alone and now suddenly there were people standing beside her before she even had to ask. Nick squeezed her shoulder gently one last time before releasing her. But as they stepped fully back into the parking lot, Nyx felt it immediately.
That shift in the air. That pressure. And she looked up straight into Noah's eyes across the lot.
He had just arrived and the moment he saw her face, saw the tear stains, saw Folio beside her... something dark and terrifying unfolded silently behind his gaze. Noahās jaw tightened so hard it hurt. Not because Nick had touched her, not even because Nick had seen her vulnerable... But because for one catastrophic moment, someone else had reached her before he did. The realization of that crawled beneath his skin like a disease. Nyx stood in front of him trembling slightly, her breathing uneven despite her attempts to steady it, and Noah felt every instinct inside him sharpen into something dark and consuming. The noise around them - the engines, the crew shouting, the metallic clatter of equipment being loaded faded into a distant blur. All he could truly register was her.
Her pale face. Her watery eyes. The faint trembling in her fingers.
His Nyx had been terrified.
And he'd not been there.
The guilt nearly split him open when he was next to her. Noahās hand remained on her hip, fingers tightening instinctively against the fabric of her shirt, not enough to hurt, just enough to feel her there. Safe now. - You shouldāve called me. - he said quietly, his words were directed at both of them. Nick noticed it immediately. Noahās tone wasnāt aggressive, but it carried something heavier than anger. Possession. The kind one that settled into a room and made people instinctively step back before they understood why. - I handled it. - Nick replied carefully. - She just needed someone to ground her. - Noah looked at him then for a second, and after that Nick understood exactly what Jolly had meant. Because Noahās eyes did not look grateful.
They looked starving.
Not for violence or for control in the obvious sense. Something worse. Something quieter. The unbearable need to be the one she reached for first. The one who held her together. The one place her fear ended. And Nyx felt it instantly. She felt that tension, that dangerous silence blooming beneath Noahās calm exterior. Her pulse fluttered again, weaker this time, but Noah now noticed it immediately. His entire focus snapped back onto her like a chain pulling taut. - Hey, babe. - he said softly, instantly gentler. The kind of softness that came only after something inside him had already turned vicious. - Look at me. - She did and Noah felt his chest constrict painfully. There were still tears caught in her lashes and because of that something inside him became unbearable. Without thinking, he stepped even closer until there was barely space left between their bodies. One of his tattooed hands slid upward, slowly, carefully, settling against the side of her neck beneath her hair. His thumb brushed once against her skin, grounding himself as much as her. - You donāt have to hide when this happens. - he murmured low enough that only she could hear. - Not from me. - Nyx swallowed hard. - But... I wasnāt hiding... I just... - You disappeared there, Nyx. - His voice dropped further, roughened by panic he still hadnāt fully swallowed down. - I looked for you and you were gone. - The words struck harder than they should have. Because underneath the calm tone was terror.
Pure terror.
The thought of losing sight of her, even briefly, had hollowed him out within seconds. Nick shifted awkwardly beside them, suddenly feeling like he was witnessing something too intimate to stand near. - I think sheās okay now. - he said carefully, and Noah nodded once without taking his eyes off Nyx. - Yeah. - Noah answered quietly. - She is now. Thanks. - The implication settled heavily in the air. Nyx felt warmth spread through her chest despite the lingering panic. Twisted warmth. Dangerous warmth. Because the way Noah looked at her now made the entire world feel distant, muted, irrelevant. Like nothing mattered except whether she was breathing. And God, part of her loved it. Noah brushed his thumb against the onyx resting against her collarbone. The black stone shifted between his fingers slowly, reverently, like something sacred. His gaze darkened. - What triggered it? - he asked simply, but there was a note of impatience and dangerous concern in his voice. Nyx hesitated for a moment, but then she quietly answered: - Chris. - The change in Noah was immediate. Not outwardly. That was the frightening part. He didn't explode, didn't curse... Or even didn't raise his voice. He simply became still. Completely still. Nick felt the temperature around them drop. - Why? - Noah asked. Nyx instinctively grabbed the front of his shirt lightly before he could move away. The gesture was small, almost innocent, but it stopped him instantly. Her fingers curled against the fabric over his chest. - Noah... - That one touch destroyed whatever sharp edge had begun forming inside him. His attention snapped back to her so quickly it was almost inhuman. - Iām okay. - she whispered. Noah stared at her for several long seconds, breathing slowly through the violence building beneath his ribs. Then his hand left her neck only to slide around her waist instead, pulling her subtly closer against him. Not for show, but like for reassurance for him. - You donāt look okay. - he admitted quietly. Nyx lowered her gaze for a moment, and then, almost unconsciously, she leaned into him. Just slightly, almost sheepishly, but Noah felt all of it. The trust, the surrender, the silent choosing of him over the panic still clawing at her chest. The sensation nearly ruined him, his arm tightened around her instinctively. Nick looked away, because suddenly it no longer looked like simple protection. It looked consuming. Noah lowered his head closer to hers, and when he spoke again, his voice turning softer, more intimate, almost obsessive in the way it wrapped around her name. - You stay with me today, Nyx. - it wasn't a suggestion. Not quite an order either. It was something deeper... A need. His need to keep her close. Nyx should have resisted that tone. She knew she should've noticed how possessive it sounded, how Noahās entire body had positioned itself around hers like a wall between her and the rest of the world. But instead of that she felt safe. Safe enough that her knees stopped trembling. Safe enough that she finally breathed fully again. And Noah noticed that too.
Of course he did.
His eyes half-lidded slightly, something dark and devoted settling deeper inside them as he realized she calmed down fastest in his arms. That her body instinctively sought him now. Trusted him now.
Needed him now.
The realization fed something dangerous in him. Something that whispered: Mine. Noah closed his eyes briefly, lowering his forehead against her temple for one fleeting second before pulling back just enough to look at her again. - Iāve got you, baby. - he whispered, and these words sounded less like comfort. And more like a vow the world itself would have to pry from his hands. ***
The bus hummed softly as it devoured mile after mile of highway, the landscape beyond the windows dissolving into streaks of green and gray. Inside, the steady vibration settled into the walls, into the seats, into every quiet breath shared between exhausted bodies. Nyx sat on the couch with her hands folded loosely in her lap, watching him. Because Noah sat across the aisle, close enough to see her, impossibly far away to reach by her. His elbows rested on his knees, his head was lowered, broad shoulders rigid beneath the weight of thoughts no one else could hear. He hadn't looked at her since they'd boarded. He hadn't sat beside her. Hadn't brushed against her in passing. Hadn't even allowed himself to the smallest accidental touch. As though he had sentenced himself. As though failing to reach her during her panic attack had stripped him of the right to stand at her side. Nyx studied every detail of him: the tension locked beneath his jaw, the restless flex of tattooed fingers against his thigh, the way his breathing slowed deliberately whenever his eyes threatened to find her. He was punishing himself. Still. Because somewhere inside him existed an impossible belief that if she was hurt, it meant he had failed. She knew him now. She knew that beneath his calm lived something immense and frightening, something that loved with such terrifying intensity it mistook responsibility for existence itself. His protection had never been about control. It had become identity. If she suffered⦠then he believed he deserved to suffer twice as much. Oh God⦠A soft smile curved across her lips and she stood, walking towards a quieter place. Her every step was slow enough that he could stop her if he truly wished to. He didn't. She felt his gaze before she heard the quiet shift of his breathing. Like a starving animal pretending it wasn't watching the only source of warmth in the room. She disappeared behind the curtain leading into the sleeping compartment, the small space beyond was dimly lit, wrapped in silence and hidden from the laughter drifting through the rest of the bus. She leaned against the partition between the bunks and waited. She didn't have to call his name, she only looked toward the opening. It was all he needed. Noah appeared a heartbeat later and he hesitated only once. Not because he didn't want to come, but because he wanted to come too much. The curtain slid closed behind him with a whisper, and world disappeared. For a long moment neither of them spoke. He stood only inches away, his body instinctively placing itself between her and the rest of the bus, as though walls alone weren't enough. Even here, where no danger existed, he positioned himself like a shield, like breathing itself had taught him only one purpose. Protect her.
His hands remained rigid at his sides, because he still refused to touch her first. For him touching her become sacred. A privilege she granted, and never something he claimed. Finally Nyx lifted her hands slowly, her fingertips rested against his shoulders. His reaction was immediate, because his breath caught. Every muscle beneath her palms tightened before trembling beneath the gentlest pressure. His eyes lifted to hers, dark and searching, almost frightened by how completely she unraveled him with something so small. She slid her hands down his tattooed arms until she found his. His fingers were cold. She intertwined them with her own, then, without hesitation, she guided both of his hands to her waist. And Noah inhaled sharply. His palms settled against her as though they had spent years searching for that exact place, his fingers tightened instinctively. Not enough to hurt, but only enough to reassure himself she was real. That she was standing here, that he hadn't imagined surviving long enough to reach this moment. Noah looked at her as though she had entrusted him with something infinitely more valuable than her body. She had entrusted him with herself. Nyx reached up again, cupping his face between her hands, and his eyes fluttered closed for half a second. Almost involuntarily. Like someone who had spent years surviving storms only to discover what sunlight felt like.
- Noah⦠- His name barely left her lips. It wasn't loud sound, it didn't need to be. The sound alone pulled every fragment of his attention toward her until nothing else existed. - You can't protect me every second in your life. - His jaw tightened after these words. She felt it beneath her fingertips.
- You weren't where I search you. I was late⦠- he whispered roughly. The words carried more guilt than explanation. - You needed me⦠and I wasn't there... - Nyx smiled sadly.
- Noah. I wasnāt alone. You gave me people who love you. - His brows drew together at her words, and she rested her forehead gently against his. - But Nick didn't replace you. Never. He stood where you couldn't at that one moment. He protected me because he's your family. And your family became mine. - Silence stretched between them. It was heavy, but alive. And something inside Noah shifted. Not his love, that was impossible. Not even his devotion, that ran too deep to change. It was something quieter. It was a realization that loving her didn't always mean standing alone between her and the world. Sometimes⦠it meant trusting the people she trusted. Sometimes protecting her also meant allowing others to help carry the weight that had nearly broken him. His hands trembled against her waist.
- But⦠I don't know how to stop worryingā¦
I don't want you to stop. - Nyx whispered with softnes. - I just don't want it to destroy you. - His eyes searched hers desperately.
- Nyx⦠As long as you're breathing. - he admitted quietly. - Some part of me will always be counting your breaths. - Nyx's expression softened more.
- I know that, Noah. And I really feel safe with you. But you don't have to "carry" me alone anymore. - For the first time since the panic attack⦠Noah allowed himself to believe her. Not because the fear disappeared, it never would, but because she had asked him not to care about her less, but only to let others care about her too. And for her⦠he would learn that. After that Nyx ran her fingers down his face, to his neck and nape, through his hair, combing it, and then back down his cheeks, as if to draw him in with a mere touch. His eyes traveled down the line of her body, and though he wanted to close his eyes against the pressure of her touch, he couldn't, because he didn't want to miss anything of her sight. Nyx stood on her tiptoes, leaned her weight against the wall, and pulled him closer. Noah felt the warmth of her breath on his lips, like a trembling tension between them. He didn't shift, didn't move, just wait, as if waiting with all his being for the moment she would give him permission⦠Nyx slowly looked up, smiled⦠And then their lips met. Not immediately passionately, not abruptly, as if testing the waters. She kissed him lightly at first, probing, as if checking if the world still existed just for the two of them. Nyx allowed herself a gentle pressure, guiding his lips to her rhythm but still maintaining control. Noah responded immediately, his body acting on instinct; he kissed her harder, deeper, but still cautiously. His hands moved higher, to her slender waist, and squeezed lightly, feeling every movement, every tiny reaction beneath his fingers. Nyx sighed blissfully, because no one had ever touched her like that. So tenderly, so carefully, almost like something sacred⦠The kiss grew increasingly intense, but not chaotic. It was obsessive in the sense that Noah wanted to protect her with his whole being, to have her with him, to absorb her presence, and Nyx allowed him and simultaneously guided him, feeding his desire without losing her own power. Because the more of her he had, the more he lost himself to her will. Like a junkie on a quest for strength. His head tilted slightly, his nose buried in her hair, inhaling its scent deeply, as if to capture this moment within himself forever. Nyx wrapped her arms around his neck, her fingers gently tracing the skin of his neck, leading the kiss further, deeper, her movements saying everything words couldn't: You can't protect me every step of the way, but you can be here now. And that's enough. Noah sighed softly at the connection, embracing all his anger, desire, and obsession with her in that single gesture. Their tongues danced in perfect unison, brushing against each other in hunger and fantasy. The kiss lasted longer than either of them had planned, the air around them rippling with closeness, tension, and unspoken promises. When they finally broke apart, their foreheads were still touching, their breaths ragged and tangled, their hearts beating in the same rapid rhythm. Nyx looked into his eyes and smiled softly, filled with a confidence and power she had never given anyone before. Noah, however, knew he would never let her go again, but this time not out of compulsion, but out of a deep, obsessive need to be her shadow and guardian.
Noah still hadnāt moved away from her. His forehead rested against her temple, their breaths tangled together, warm and uneven after the kiss that had left both of them altered somehow. Nyx could still feel it lingering on her lips ā the hunger in him, the restraint, the terrifying devotion threaded through every second he touched her. And Noah⦠God, Noah looked ruined.
Not in the weak type, but undone in the way only she could do to him now. His hands remained on her waist, fingers spread wide as though he still needed physical proof that she was standing there with him, willingly pressed against his body instead of disappearing back into panic and shadows. His breathing was slower now, but every inhale still trembled faintly when it passed through him. Nyx was watched him carefully, that war inside his eyes. That possessiveness, guilt and The unbearable relief at the same time. And beneath all of it āthere was that most strong filling: love. Dark enough to consume him whole if she ever asked it to. Her fingers slid through the hair at the nape of his neck again, softer this time, almost thoughtful. Noahās eyes fluttered for half a second at the touch before fixing back onto her face immediately, like instinct forced him to keep looking at her. As if losing sight of her for even a moment had become impossible. - Youāre thinking too much, Noah. - she whispered and a faint, humorless smile touched his mouth. - You kissed me... - he murmured quietly, his voice was roughened beyond recognition. - I think I earned the right to lose my mind a little. - that answer made warmth spread through her chest. Not because of the words themselves, but because Noah sounded almost afraid of how much it meant to him. Nyx tilted her head slightly, studying him beneath lowered lashes. - You really punish yourself for everything, donāt you? - she asked softly and Noahās jaw flexed. - You had a panic attack. - Yes. And Nick helped me. - I shouldāve been there. - that response came instantly. Like his mind had repeated it over and over since the moment he found her there. Nyxās expression softened at that. There it was again ā that unbearable need inside him to carry every wound she suffered as though it belonged to him personally. As though her pain was proof of his failure. She stepped closer deliberately until there was no space left between their bodies at all. Noah inhaled sharply at the movement, his grip tightening unconsciously around her waist. - Look at me. - she whispered and he obeyed immediately. Not because she demanded it, but because he always would. Nyx rested one hand against his chest, right above his pounding heart. She could feel how violently it reacted to her closeness, to every word, her every glance. Noah was all restraint on the outside, but beneath his skin he burned. - You donāt own every bad thing that happens to me, Noah. - she said quietly, and his eyes darkened instantly. The word own did something dangerous to him, and Nyx noticed it. A faint shiver passed through his body beneath her hand, subtle but real, and suddenly the atmosphere shifted again ā heavier now, charged with something deeper than simple affection. Noah lowered his gaze briefly, almost as if ashamed of the thoughts that words awakened inside him. But Nyx touched his jaw gently, forcing his attention back. - I didnāt say you couldnāt protect me. - she added softly. - I mean you donāt have to destroy yourself trying to. - The silence afterward felt intimate enough to bruise. Noah stared at her for a long moment before speaking. - You donāt understand what youāve become to me.... - that confession came low. Honest. Almost involuntary. Nyxās breath caught slightly, when Noah leaned closer unconsciously, unable not to follow her warmth. - When I couldnāt find you earlier... - he continued, his voice was quieter now, like rough around the edges. - ... it felt like someone reached into my chest and ripped something out. - His thumb brushed slowly against her hip beneath her shirt, reverent and possessive all at once. - And then I saw someone else calming you down and all I could think was that it shouldāve been me. - after that Nyx swallowed slowly, because there was no manipulation in his voice. No even anger. It was only raw obsession stripped bare. And somehow that honesty made it worse.
Or better. She still hadnāt decided. - Noah⦠- I know itās unhealthy. - he interrupted her softly, almost amused at himself. - I know normal people probably donāt think like this... - His brown eyes searched hers intensely. - But every time you panic, every time you look hurt, my brain reacts like the world is ending. - His hand slid upward from her waist, slowly tracing the curve of her spine beneath her shirt until it settled between her shoulder blades, holding her against him completely now. Not trapping, but keeping. - And the worst part? - he whispered, and Nyxās pulse fluttered after that. - Yeah...? - Noahās expression changed then in something darker, deeper, devastatingly sincere. - I donāt want it to stop, Nyx. - These words wrapped around her throat like silk and Nyx felt heat rise beneath her skin, not fear exactly, but awareness. Power. The understanding that Noahās devotion had crossed into something irreversible long ago. And that she was no longer trying to escape it... Her fingers slid slowly along his throat again, feeling the way he shuddered beneath her touch. - You wonāt scare me away with that, you know? - she whispered. - I need this, Noah... I need you. - Noah closed his eyes briefly, because her words nearly destroyed what little self-control he had left. When he looked at her again, there was something openly starving in his gaze now. Not lust alone. Something far more intimate. The terrible ache of someone who had spent too long holding himself back. - You really shouldnāt say things like that to me. - he murmured. - Why? - Because you already know Iād burn the world down for you. - Nyx smiled softly then, and that made Noahās restraint fracture further. He kissed her again, this time slower, deeper, like he was no longer asking permission to feel what he felt. One of his hands buried itself carefully into her hair while the other held her against his chest with quiet desperation, and Nyx melted into the kiss willingly, guiding him with soft movements of her lips, her fingers, her breath. Noah kissed her like a man trying to memorize salvation. Like every soft sound she made fed something inside him that had been starving for years. And when she sighed against his mouth, his entire body reacted instantly, it was a quiet, involuntary tremor running through him before he pressed his forehead against hers again, breathing unevenly. - Nyx... - he whispered hoarsely. That nickname sounded less like a name now, but more like worship. His thumb brushed gently beneath her jaw as he looked at her with that same consuming focus that made the rest of the world disappear. And for the first time in her life, Iris understood something terrifying: Noah would never survive losing her now.
And somehow... she wasnāt afraid of that at all. ***
The bus still rolled steadily through the darkening evening, headlights cutting long golden lines across the highway. Inside, warmth had settled into every corner of the lounge area. The earlier tension, the panic, the suffocating fear that had clung to Nyxās skin only hours ago, seemed distant now, dissolved beneath laughter and movement and voices layered over one another chaotically. Nyx was cross-legged in the middle of the fold-out couch, one sleeve slipping slightly off her shoulder as she laughed at something ridiculous Jolly had just said. Her cheeks were flushed pink, her eyes bright and alive in a way Noah had once thought he might never see again. And God, she was beautiful like this. Not fragile or shrinking. Just alive. Nick sat beside her, arguing loudly with Nicholas over something completely meaningless while Bryan occasionally lifted his camera to capture some moments no one else noticed. Someone threw a pillow, Jolly nearly spilled his drink laughing, Bryan muttered a dry comment under his breath that made the entire couch erupt again. And right in the center of it all was Nyx. His Nyx. Relaxed, fearless and safe.
Noah sat opposite them in the armchair near the window, one ankle resting over his knee, arms folded loosely across his chest. To anyone else, he looked calm now. Grounded again. But internally, he was unraveling quietly. Because he could not stop watching her.
Every little thing caught him.
The way she tilted her head back when she laughed, the way her fingers absentmindedly touched the black onyx at her throat, or the way she no longer flinched when someone moved suddenly beside her.
Each tiny detail pressed against something bruised and aching inside him.
For weeks... For months, he had carried her fear like a weapon pointed constantly at his own chest. Every breath she took had felt fragile, every silence dangerous. He had convinced himself that if he looked away for even a second, the world would find another way to destroy her. But now... Now she was laughing so hard tears gathered in the corners of her eyes while Nick dramatically accused Jolly of cheating during some stupid card game. And Noah realized something terrifyingly simple: She was healing. And not because he locked the world away from her, but because she had finally found people who stayed. That realization settled heavily in his chest. Nyx glanced toward him suddenly, instinctively searching for him even in the middle of the noise. Their eyes met immediately, and Noah felt his heartbeat stumble.
Her smile softened the second she looked at him. It wasn't performative or uncertain. It was pure trusting. Like she knew exactly where he was at all times now. Like some invisible thread between them remained taut no matter how crowded the room became. Noah exhaled slowly through his nose, leaning back slightly deeper into the chair. For the first time in what felt like forever, the constant pressure beneath his ribs loosened.
āTheyāre not enemies, Noah. Theyāre your family.ā
Her words echoed again in his mind. He looked around the bus more carefully this time. At Nick making Nyx laugh until she hid her face in embarrassment, at Bryan quietly keeping an eye on everyone from the corner without making it obvious, at Jolly throwing another pillow across the room while Nicholas nearly choked laughing. And suddenly Noah understood what she had been trying to teach him. Protecting her didn't have to mean isolating her inside the cage of his attention, it didn't have to mean standing alone between her and the world until he collapsed beneath the weight of it. Because these people, his people, for him would protect her too. Realization should have made the possessiveness inside him recoil. Instead, strangely... it soothed it. Because the thing Noah feared most was not sharing her space with others. It was losing her. And watching her laugh now, bright and genuine and unafraid, made something inside him finally unclench.
Nyx caught him staring again. This time she smiled knowingly.Softly, as if she could see every thought moving behind his eyes. Noahās lips twitched upward despite himself. It was small gesture, almost invisible, but real. And Nick noticed it immediately. - Oh my God! - he groaned dramatically, pointing across the bus. - There it is. He does know how to smile! Fuck me! - Jolly looked over theatrically. - Holy shit. Somebody document this before it disappears! - and of course Bryan lifted the camera immediately. Noah rolled his eyes, already feeling warmth rise annoyingly into his face while the others laughed louder. Nyx laughed too, but then something changed. Her gaze lingered on him for a second longer than before. And Noah saw it instantly - that quiet look she only gave him now. One filled with warmth, trust, and something deeper still lingering beneath the surface after the kiss they shared hidden behind the curtain. His pulse slowed. For once, he didn't feel like a guard dog waiting for danger... He just felt⦠present. With her. Near her.
He was enough.
Nyx tucked one leg beneath herself and rested her chin briefly against her knee, still smiling as she watched the chaos around her. Noah noticed the way she relaxed completely into the noise now instead of bracing against it. And suddenly he understood something he had been too afraid to admit before: Love was not only vigilance. It was that terrifying willingness to let other people help carry what once threatened to crush him alive. Noah looked at her one last time. Really looked.
At the light returning to her face. At the ease in her body. At the peace slowly replacing survival.
And for the first time in months, the thought entered his mind without panic following behind it. She was safe not because he controlled every door around her, but because she was no longer standing alone inside the dark.
Noah closed his eyes briefly, letting the sound of her laughter wash over him like something sacred. Then he opened them again and watched her smile. And finally, at this moment, he allowed himself to breathe.
