This is going to sound kind of strange, but one of the most valuable comments I ever got made me cry, and not necessarily in a happy way. In my previous fandom, my first fic was a short character study about a particular character that @galadhir​ and I both love. While galadhir had beautiful things to say about my writing (I think “It’s gorgeous, and frightening” will always be one of my favorite reactions to my writing), she disagreed with my interpretation of the character. This turned into an exchange where we analyzed why we had such different perspectives about this character and his tendency toward anger and violence. It was an emotional discussion, at least for me, but an incredibly enriching one. I think in the end, the conversation revealed as much about our own personalities and experiences as it did about the character in question.So why do I consider this the greatest compliment I’ve ever received? Because writing something that sparked that kind of debate - one that led to a better understanding of ourselves, each other, and the fictional character - still feels like an accomplishment to this day. Someday I hope to write something gorgeous and frightening again - something that makes my readers feel uncomfortable and leads to productive conversation.
