Charlie's guide to Bearded Dragons!
HI THERE! MY NAME IS CHARLIE, AND NOW THAT MY HOOMAN HAS STEPPED AWAY FROM HER BLOG, I DECIDED YOU NEEDED TO KNOW THE TRUTH ABOUT OWNING A BEARDED DRAGON!
I'm cute right? I'm a bearded dragon (not an iguana) and I require a lot of care that most people don't realize.
First of all, I am a omnivore meaning I eat bugs (roaches, crickets, wax worms, phoenix worms, etc) and I also eat greens and fruit (there are some fruits I can't eat like rhubarb) If you can't feed me bugs, then you don't need one of me as a pet. Don't feed me mealworms, yes they are cheap, yes I will eat them but I don't digest them the right way and they go in like mealworms and come out in identifiable pieces and parts. YOU CANNOT feed me bugs from outside they can carry parasites or have been exposed to pesticides.
Which brings me to: MY POO SMELLS AND IT WILL PERMEATE THROUGHOUT THE ROOM. I'VE MADE A GROWN MAN GAG!
I need specific lighting one is heating and one is for UVB which helps me process calcium. The heat light helps me digest food and if I don't have a heat light the food rots in my stomach. If you haven't guessed or you live under a rock (hahaha lizard humor) I'm cold blooded meaning I don't keep heat!
THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS I CAN'T EAT AND A LOT OF THINGS I CAN YOU HAVE TO KNOW WHICH IS WHICH. And when you do find the right foods which costs a lot of money every week, I might just turn my snoot up too it and ignore it completely.
I CAN GET SICK YOU NEED TO FIND A VETÂ THAT DEALS WITH EXOTICS. Some diseases I can get are yellow fungus, mouth rot, and respiratory infections among other's.
I lick things. I lick them to discover what they are because my sense of smell is poor. Things I have licked include: my rock, my bowl, the wall, the dog, my hooman's face, fingers, arms, feet, toes, teeth (though that was gross and unexpected for the both of us), the dog bones, refrigerator, and my hammocks.
I glass surf when I want to get out of my house. I am not dancing and I can do damage to my snoot trying to get through the glass.
I REQUIRE attention you can not just ignore me.
IF YOU WANT A PAIR OF DRAGONS BE PREPARED TO GET TWO OF EVERYTHING! LIKE TWO HOUSES, TWO LIGHTS, ETC. I am a territorial animal and I do not need a Friend! You, are annoying enough ( I promise).
See those pink pointy things? Those are teeth! I use them to nom on food! I DO BITE! But only as a last defense and I have bitten her (it WAS her fault, but I digress)
I do make a great pet! But to own one of me, you have to do your research to provide appropriate and correct care. I am not an impulse buy or a surprise gift (not even the betta I continuously try to nom on, deserves to be a surprise gift, animals require research for proper care).
IF YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO PROVIDE ME WITH CARE DO NOT BUY A BEARDED DRAGON!
