Beards.
I am a beard owner, and have been all my adult life - during a 10 year relationship, my partner only saw me beardless once. I may not know much about makeup techniques, but I would like to share information about where beards grow and how they look, to further improve your makeup.
The above scary picture is me, pictured with approximately 2-3 months of growth. The individual hairs are 6-8cm in length, with neck coverage starting roughly level with my adam’s apple. If you drew a line from the back of my jaw, down under my adam’s apple and back to the other side, that would roughly encompass all the area where the thicker beard hair grows. Note that beard hair doesn’t tend to sprout from the skin below the ear, although thicker fuller hair will fluff up & cover that area.
Next, note how far up the front of the face the thicker hair appears, and how uneven the edge is. It’s just below my cheekbone, following an almost-horizontal line from the bottom of my nose to my ear canal on each side. This means that stubble can even appear above the height of my moustache, although it would rarely be as dark as along the jawline.
Time for another visual aid - this is cropped & rotated from a much larger image from Collider.com:
Notice how the stubble line is well demarked at the ear/jaw line. Charlie’s an excellent example for this because of how dark his hair is, so you can also see how far up his cheek the stubble goes; it’s not quite as high as mine near the nose but heading towards the ear it comes right up past his earlobe. And in both pictures, you can see the small voids that occur below the outer lower lip.
You can also see here how different areas look darker due to the folds in the skin, or because the hair grows in different directions. Depending on what kind of effect you’re employing, you may need to increase shading along the jaw line and above the chin, along the ridges of the philtrum, and if you have a dimple then that too would present a darker appearance.
Human nature is to try & make things look even, but Nature is rarely so even-handed. Cheek growth especially can be very patchy, so don’t be afraid to leave thinned spots in the middle of dark areas. That said, beard hairs grows at a generally equal rate across the face even if there’s gaps between them, so if your intent is to appear unshaven be sure to cover the whole area - Hollywood often makes “natural” stubble look terrible due to too much shaping & grooming!
Facial hair can also vary in colour when compared to scalp hair, just like underarm and genital hair. Before he went grey, my Dad’s facial hair always had a significant amount of ginger in it even though his scalp hair was dark brown. My own facial hair is streaked with grey and white hairs as can be seen above! Those with light coloured hair may wish to consider a darker shade for their stubble.
