Time for Change
I am saddened by so much of what I have seen in the news this week. I absolutely agree that Roseanne crossed a line and that ABC needed to take action. There is no defense for her tweet and if you've spent the week saying that what she said is okay because other people have said worse, I think that's ridiculous. We teach our daughter that she can't justify bad behavior just because someone else has bad behavior. She has learned that lesson and she's 10.
That said, I'm really struggling with some other recent events. I need someone to explain to me how a comedienne can call any woman the word used by Samantha Bee on air and still have a show. I need to know how actors can respond with vulgar tweets supporting her for doing so and have people applaud. I need someone to explain to me how a comedienne can try to humiliate another woman publicly at the White House Correspondents' dinner and be given a show. I need someone to tell me when it became acceptable to tear down other women because you don't agree with them? Actually, when did it become okay to tear down other people PERIOD??!! Last but by no means least, someone please tell me how a TV show that features a man who is not only accused of raping multiple women BUT is convicted of rape is still shown BUT the show of a woman who sent a tweet is pulled from everywhere?
It's as if there is there is this everchanging double standard of what's acceptable and I just don't get it. We seem to have forgotten the basic rules of decency starting with treat others as you would like to be treated. I don't care what your politics are, what news channel you watch or who you voted for - enough is enough. We need to start acting like the grown-ups we are supposed to be and set an example for our children. We need to stop the insanity of namecalling, labeling, and dehumanization that has become the norm and we need to do it now. We can disagree with a viewpoint without tearing down the person. In fact, that's how we learn.
