What's one thing I'll bring to Mars? I'll bring my meditation zafu to keep me centered, clear & mindful so I can be a valuable member of the team. Also instead of buckwheat as filler, the zafu will contain spores that can be used to seed microbial life in Mars. The leggings I'm wearing can photosynthesise to create electricity that powers life support systems. Blue is a good colour to stand out in a red landscape in case of being lost or needing help in an emergency. The rock on my right is actually a stromatolite which are layered mounds, columns, and sheet-like sedimentary rocks that were originally formed by the growth of layer upon layer of cyanobacteria, a single-celled photosynthesizing microbe. This is the Gene Gun system (biolistic bombardment). It works by using a sudden release of compressed helium into a vacuum chamber. This fast release of pressure fires micro bullets of tungsten doused with DNA constructs (that codes for fluorescence + antibiotic resistance made by E. Coli bacterial colony in last week's lab workshop) into a colony of P. Tricornutum diatoms on the target agar plate. The tungsten bullets will pierce the cell wall of the diatoms. Many of the diatoms hit with too much pressure from the tungsten bullets will simply burst and die. But some will survive with the DNA construct delivered into the diatoms's cell nucleus.
