Most of the time, Adair is pretty good at pushing through a good ol' brain fog until he can just pass out
And he does just randomly pass out, too.
Usually curled up or stretched out in the doctor's lounge at the ER, or in the barracks on base, or any number of random and less expected locations in either place.
Sleeping randomly is a super power that he shares woth other medics, but thats a different post.
This is about No Thoughts Brain Empty™ Adair.
He kinda has a signature pose that he assumes.
Sitting down, hunched forward with his elbows resting on his knees and his hands clasped loosely in front of him just. Totally dissociating.
A stereotypical "I'm watching football and can't hear a word youre saying, sorry" pose.
The TV is usually on, if he's sitting near it
But a lot of times, thats as far as he gets.
So it's often just. Whatever the tv was set to when it git turned off.
He watches a lot of the screen saver for whatever system the tv has.
And kids tv shows left on from whatever Carrick and Peadar had on.
Nick at Night is frequent too. So he's seen all of Friends, even if he doesn't remember some of it.
Or movie title screens and Netflix previews on repeat.
Thats usually how Ewan gets a bead on something being not quite right
"Hey, how many times has the theme song for that played?" "Uhhhh....I dont know, let's go check on him."
Ewan calls it "Low Power Mode."
Adair gets it after really long, hard shifts on base or at the ER, and sometimes after a really tough match or work out.
He doesn't really blink much.
And his breathing slows way down. Gets kinda shallow too.
Like he's breathing yes. But it's small. Definitely not getting as much oxygen as he should.
And you really have to squint to see any sign of him breathing.
When he gets "woken up" he jumps a little and gasps, finally taking a real breath.
Takes him a few seconds to "reboot" and reorient himself.
Ewan always tells him to go to bed.
To which Adair always says "No, it's ok, I'm fine."
But it all comes out in one word.
Will sleep like the dead that night
But you wouldnt be able to tell if he's awake.
He holds so still he seems like hes asleep.
Until he starts crying, of course.
(Not always, but I guess that would be the in between. The exhaustion and stress and everything finally catching up to him and he just cries himself to sleep.)
Carrick thinks its kinda funny when Adair's in low power mode.
(He's only 13. Doesn't really get that it's a sign of how totally wiped out Adair is. Not completely anyway.)
He likes to mess with him.
Changes the chanel on tv to something terrible.
The most boring stuff he can find.
Sometimes just straight infomercials.
Or he changes the chanel rapid fire, hardly giving the tv a chance to switch.
Once he even set it to a chanel that was disconnected, just so there'd be loud static.
Just to see how long before Adair snaps out of it.
It could go on for hours.
But usually Castor or Ewan starts to catch on and puts an end to it.
Peadar gets worried sometimes when it happens.
He'll lean up against Adair's shoulder and that almost always jolts him awake.
"Sorry, did you say something?" "I'm tired." "Yeah....yeah me too, kiddo. Let's go to bed...."
