You heard the news that he was coming back from so many people that you were starting to believe it was too good to be true. A rumor designed to lure you into a false sense of happiness only for it to be ripped away at the last possible second. So instead of getting excited and joining in on the plans for the welcome home party you kept your distance, not even bothering to offer your opinion when asked how he would feel about certain things â you knew him best after all. Sure, that used to be true, back when he was around and the two of you were inseparable; back before he moved across the country and you heard from him maybe once. No, you didnât know him best at all. In fact, you were pretty sure the strangers all across the world knew him better than you did now. So you didnât let yourself think about the party or the planning or him. You were much better off pretending that he didnât exist at all.
You walked into the bar, exhausted from a long day of meetings, wanting nothing more than to start your weekend with a glass of wine. The crowd in the bar was larger than any other Friday night and you frowned a little as you took a seat on the last available stool. It wasnât until you looked around the bar and noticed the decorations, complete with a welcome home sign, that you realized why the bar was so crowded. Your efforts in distancing yourself from this particular event had clearly paid off because you genuinely forgot about it. Maybe it was due to all the stress at work or maybe it was because you really didnât want to see him but youâd forgotten about the party nonetheless.
Not wanting to be there when he arrived you got off the stool and made your way toward the entrance. You made it half-way before the door opened and he walked in. You stopped dead in your tracks and stared. You took in his appearance as his eyes scanned the room. He looked good and you hated to admit that. His hair had gotten a little longer and he was considerably more tattooed than when he left, noticeably heâd removed all of his piercings too, but he was still very clearly the same Frank you remembered.
His eyes landed on you just as you were about to turn around and leave through the secondary entrance at the back of the bar and he smiled. You couldnât help but smile in return and give a small wave. All of the resolve youâd built up about leaving the bar and not being around him had completely crumbled the second his eyes met yours and you were now completely rooted to the spot as he made his way through the crowd toward you. He shook a couple of hands and gave a few hugs as he encountered the party goers but each encounter was brief. It was clear the only person he wanted to see was you.
âY/N/N, hey,â he said when he finally reached you, shoving his hands in the front pockets of his jeans. âI didnât think you were coming. Everyone I talked to said you couldnât make it.â
âWell, I hadnât really planned on it,â you admitted. âI mean itâs been eight years since Iâve been seeing your face and I havenât heard a word from you since you moved out to LA so I kind of figured you didnât really want me here. It is good seeing you again though, Frankie, but there are a lot of people here who came out to welcome you home. Iâm gonna head out, go make your rounds.â
You gave him another small wave and a sad smile, turned around, and walked out of the back entrance of the bar. Your lip began to tremble as you walked over toward your car and you willed yourself not to cry. You didnât think seeing him again would affect you quite this much and you were angry with yourself for it. It had been eight years, you were so sure there were no feelings left for him but apparently you were very, very wrong.
You finally made it to your car and started to open the door when a hand came from behind you and pushed the door shut. You turned around and came face to face with Frank again, his eyes searching your face for any reason as to why you left the way you did. He noticed your eyes brimming with tears and let out a sigh, running his hand down his face.
âI didnât mean to hurt you, Y/N,â he said. âWhen I left I just thought it would be easier on both of us if I cut off all contact.â
âWhy would that be easier, Frank?â you asked, hating the fact that the tears started spilling down your face. âI loved you. I thought what we had going was great and then you told me the band was moving to LA and that was fine, I wasnât going to tell you not to go, but I figured we would work through the distance and then you went radio silent. And it wasnât just a couple of months while you recorded the album, no, it was eight fucking years of radio silence! And now you come home and just expect everything to go back to normal?â
âI never said I expected things to go back to normal, Y/N/N,â he said, leaning against your car. âI know it canât go back to normal but I want to try. I canât live my life without you in it. I spent the last eight years that way and it was fucking miserable.â
âIf you canât live your life without me then why did you shut me out?â You asked, wiping the tears from your face.
âI was worried that the distance would be too hard and you would leave me,â he said, looking down at his shoes. âI didnât know if the move was going to be for a couple of months or a couple of years and I didnât want you to uproot your life. You had just gotten that promotion and I wasnât going to take that away from you by asking you to follow me and the distance scared me. I know people do it all the time and make it work all the time and I knew we made it work when I was touring before the move but it just felt bigger this time around. The distance felt bigger. I wanted you to be able to have the life you wanted without having to worry about where I was going to be.â
âDid you really think I wanted a future if it didnât involve you?â You asked, leaning against the car next to him. âI didnât care where you were, Frankie, I just wanted to be with you. And if you had asked me to follow you, I would have. My boss was willing to relocate me to LA if necessary. I had planned for the big moves but I stayed here because you didnât make it known that you wanted me with you.â
âIâm sorry, Y/N,â he said. âI really am.â
âI know, Frank,â you sighed, pushing yourself off the car. âI forgive you for what happened, it was so long ago thereâs no sense in being upset about it anymore but Iâm not sure I can do this with you again.â
Frank nodded, pushing himself off the car as well, and shoving his hands into his front pockets once again.
âI need to get home. Itâs been a long week. Have fun in there and maybe Iâll see you around,â you said, getting into the car and pulling out of the parking space.
By the time you made it home you were even more exhausted than when youâd gotten to the bar. Your mind was running a mile a minute, however, and you knew that sleep wasnât going to be on the horizon for you any time soon. After changing into more comfortable clothes, taking your makeup off and throwing your hair up into a messy bun, you poured yourself a large glass of wine and sat down on the couch â fully prepared to watch a marathon of your favorite cheesy movies and forget your encounter with Frank had even happened.
You spent a majority of the first movie replaying your conversation with Frank over and over in your mind. By the time you were half way finished with the second movie you were ready to call it quits and head to bed, even if you werenât all that tired. You figured if you were just going to think about Frank and not pay attention to the movie you were watching there was no sense in sitting on the couch and driving up the electricity bill.
You had just locked the front door and were about to turn off the porch light when you saw someone jogging up your front steps. It didnât take you longer than a second to recognize that it was Frank. With a sigh you unlocked the door and opened it just as he was about to knock.
âWhat are you doing here, Frankie?â
He didnât say anything, instead he closed the gap between the two of you, grabbed your face and kissed you. When he pulled away he set his forehead against yours.
âItâs ok that youâre not sure about doing this again because Iâm sure enough for the both of us,â he said. âI donât want to do life without you ever again, Y/N.â
âOk,â you said, giving him a small smile, before pressing your lips to his once more.

Summary: Tyler and Nicoleâs wedding day is here and it is everything they imagined and more. Nerves, last minute surprise changes, and an offer everyone hopes Auri canât refuse make for an unforgettable evening as Josh witnesses his best friend begin a new chapter in his life.
Pairing: Josh Dun x Auri, Tyler Joseph x Nicole (background)
Word Count: 3465
Warnings: two mild swears?
Square filled: âAre you as worried about tonight as I am?â
A/N: second entry for my bingo card @bandombingo I donât even know with this one, it ⊠got away from me. I regret nothing. (In case youâre wondering: âDubâ is not a typo. My little brotherâs middle name also starts with W and we call him âDub/Dub-Dub/Dubbyâ, as in Double.) Have fun!
It was no surprise when he rolled over to find her spot in bed beside him void of her presence, having already risen for the day. There was a strict schedule to adhere to and damn anything or anyone that got in her way. Josh smiled, he was so proud of her.
After a quick shower and change into basketball shorts and a t-shirt, he made his way downstairs, greeted by the aroma of fresh coffee.
At the kitchen table sat the love of his life, back to the entryway, pouring over last-minute notes and changes--perfection was Auriâs craft. Josh leaned against the wall, watching silently. He wondered how long sheâd been awake, her hair was a mess, the way it always was when she woke up. He shook his head, she was still perfect to him.
He slipped into the kitchen, announced his presence by grabbing her coffee mug from the table in front of her and refilled it before she could ask what he was doing. A teaspoon of sugar, a splash of cream, with vanilla and cinnamon stirred into that--strange, but every weird thing she loved in her coffee, Josh memorized on their first date. He set the mug back down in front of her, carefully missing the pages that littered the table and kissed the top of her head.
âMorning, Ace,â he said.
âHey, Dub.â She glanced up as he sat down, a soft smile in thanks for refreshing her cup.
âLast-minute prep?â he asked, taking her left hand in his. He brushed over her knuckles, idly playing with the ring on her finger. Watching her work, knowing as soon as Nicole and Tylerâs special day was over, theyâd begin planning their own. . . He tried not to appear too impatient for the day to be over with. There was nowhere Josh would rather be than by his best friendâs side, except maybe if their roles were reversed.
Auri hummed softly. She let a dreamy sigh slip past her lips and Josh found himself drunk on the sound. âTy will be here in an hour. Keep him on task, please? You know how nervous he gets, and itâs gonna be much worse today because itâs his fucking wedding day. Heâll be insufferable.â
Josh squeezed her hand, chuckling. âI know, babe. Donât worry, I can handle Tyler. I have been for years.â
âI have to head over to their place and start setting up over there. Whatever you do, donât let him pester Nicole today. My brother worries and Nic does not need to worry today. If it gets too bad, call us and weâll help. Or come get me and Iâll figure it out. But our main priority today is getting those two dorks down the aisle tonight.â
âHey, hey. Slow down, breathe, take a minute to yourself. You have done everything for this day since Tyler told us he wanted to hit pause on tour. Auri, you-- Anything could go wrong today, thatâs just life. But it will still be the best day of their lives because you exist in it, dude. Stop trying to outdo the amazing work youâve already done.â
âBut I promised them it would be perfect. Thatâs what I told Nicole when I said I would do this, and--â
âItâll be perfect because the people they love are there to witness it. Not because of how grand it is. Okay? Give yourself a break.â
The front door opened and shut, and Tylerâs voice called out, âYou should listen to him, you know? Heâs right.â
Auri frowned. âAnd youâre early. What are you doing here? There is a schedule for a reason, Tyler.â
âSee, Nic said youâd say that. Which is why, my darling sister, she sent me over here with bagels and coffee and told me to tell you to get your ass over to our place.â Tyler stepped into the kitchen and set his peace offering on the table, then ruffled Auriâs already messy curls. âSheâs not gonna get ready without her best friend. She needs you. And we need you to relax, all right? I need you to relax.â
Josh stood from the table and tugged on Auriâs hand, pulling her up with him. He led her back through the house to the stairs. He cupped the sides of her face with his hands, bringing her forehead down to rest against his. âEverythingâs perfect. Iâve got Tyler and everything here. Besides the boys are on their way, and thereâs no way weâll let Tyler get too caught up in his head today, okay? Now get going before Nicole comes to find you herself, and you know she will.â
âWhat would I do without you, Josh?â Auri took a deep breath, letting her expectations of herself go under the comforting presence of the man in front of her.
âLead a way less cool life than this one,â he teased, stroking his thumbs over her cheeks. âIâll see you tonight.â
* * *
With half an hour left until the ceremony, Josh was certain everything was going to go off without a hitch. Tyler looked incredible in his suit, he looked amazing in his. He had yet to see the girls but he knew they were beyond stunning, especially the bride. It was strange to think about all the ways their lives were changing suddenly. . .
Josh stood behind Tyler at the mirror set up in the guest room. Tylerâs fidgeting had become a bit more excessive in the last hour and though Josh knew how to keep his best friend calm, something else seemed to be bothering him.
âWhatâs going on, man?â Josh asked, watching Tyler fiddle with his tie for the third time.
Tyler turned, eyes wide with panic. He pulled at the tie around his neck, swallowing hard past words he didnât know how to voice. âAre you as worried about tonight as I am?â
âWorried? Man, you stand on stage every night for months at a time, in front of thousands of people and sing your heart out. And this is what youâre worried about?â It wasnât malicious; Josh spent his life learning who Tyler was and growing with him into better versions of themselves. They looked up to each other, confided in each other, relied on each other to stay sane. . .
âThis is. . .so much bigger than that,â Tyler said, fingers still pulling at his tie. He shook his head. âThis is. . . Nicole deserves this, Josh. And Iâm-- I donât--â
Josh sighed, he could only do so much but they had already called Nicole a few times that afternoon and he knew she would be in the middle of finishing up. He thought of Auri, of everything heâd told her that morning and how confident she was that she had given the two most important people in her life the perfect day. He thought about what she might say to Tyler if she were standing with them in that room.
He stepped toward Tyler and placed his hands on his best friendâs shoulders. âHey, look at me for a sec. Iâve known you two for years, Iâve seen you go through damn near everything together. Ty if you think for one second tonight is about this big grand thing. . . What Nicole needs, what she wants, man, is you. The rest of the night can go to shit and I know for a fact as long as you are waiting for her at the end of it, she will have everything.â Josh grabbed the tie from Tylerâs hands and fixed it back into place. âBut all of that aside, I have it on good authority tonight is gonna be the night of your dreams. So, how about we get you married before your sister kicks my ass?â
If anyone had told Josh Dun that watching his best friend marry the love of his life would be the second-best day of his life, he probably would have laughed at the time. But standing beside him, waiting for Nicole to walk down the aisle, feeling proud that they had all made it that far--Josh couldnât keep himself from smiling.
Tyler and Nicoleâs backyard had been transformed into a small wonderland. With a lot of time and work and compromise, Auri had taken everything unique about her brother and best friend and coupled them together in a way that made it impossible to see how they didnât work together. It flowed naturally, like they were meant to be together all along. Where one piece didnât quite fit, Auri found something that did. She found ways to combine the best things about both of them and created an atmosphere that captured the heart and soul of who Nicole and Tyler were.
Josh met Auriâs gaze where she stood off to the side near the back of the yard. He gave her a wink and a goofy smile, unable to keep his eyes off of her. The sound of Tylerâs voice as he began reciting his vows drew both of them back to the moment; but it was Tyler looking around the crowd, searching for someone, that had both of them wondering what was wrong.
âTy, you good?â
Tyler continued frantically scanning the familiar faces of their guests. He locked eyes with Auri across the lawn and smiled, gesturing her forward.
âWhat? Whatâs wrong? What happened?â she asked, quickly taking in the party, Tyler and Joshâs suits and Nicoleâs dress. âWhatever it is, give me 10 minutes and I can fix it.â
Nicole looked up at Tyler and reached for her friendâs hand. âNo, no. Nothing is wrong, itâs perfect. Truly, itâs just--â
âNic and I agreed we canât get married without everyone in the wedding present,â Tyler said.
âWhat are you talking about? Everyoneâs here.â Auri took a quick headcount of the groomsmen and bridesmaids, and just as she thought, everyone was present and accounted for. Josh and her brothers had done as promised and kept Tyler on task. She didnât understand what Tyler meant.
âNo. Auriâ--Nicole shook her head--âyou made this happen. Tonight wouldnât be what it is without you and we need you up here. We need you standing up here with us. Okay?â
âO-Okay. . .â
Josh reached forward and laced his fingers through Auriâs giving her hand a reassuring squeeze and pulling her to his side. Of course, leave it to Tyler Joseph to shake things up at his wedding.
âAre you as worried about tonight as I am?â Nicole whispered, parroting Tylerâs earlier concern and he chuckled.
He glanced over his shoulder at Auri and Josh, and turned back to his bride. âNah, not anymore. Nicole-- I spent weeks pouring over what I would say in my vows to you. I wanted them to be perfect, I thought you deserved it. But Josh helped me see that you donât need perfect, you just need me.
Take my hand, take my whole life too
ÊŒCause I canât help falling in love with you
ÊŒCause I canât help falling in love with you
Nic, I promise to be whatever you need, whenever you need.â
Auri stood under the tree where not too long ago her brother and best friend became man and wife, the new Mr. and Mrs. Tyler Joseph. To say she was proud of the way the evening had gone was an understatement. Even with Tylerâs nerves and that surprising change in the program theyâd sprung on her last minute, the smiles on their faces as they headed down the aisle together after the official announcement was made--that was the reason Auri did what she did, why she loved her job.
She spent so long taking care of everyone elseâs desires, turning other peopleâs dreams into reality, that she forgot to think of her own. She forgot to spend time on herself.
âThought Iâd find you out here,â Josh called from the back door.
Josh laughed. Wordlessly he crossed the space between them, took her hands in his and pulled her forward. âWho do you think sent me to find you? What are you still doing out here?â
She shrugged. The hardest part of the night was over and it was settling in that now, she had nothing else to do, no other clients to see for the rest of the summer. âJust needed some time to process how beautiful it all was, I guess.â
âI donât think Iâve ever seen Tyler cry the way he did when he saw Nicole walking toward him,â Josh said.
âI donât think Iâve seen either of them cry the way they did during their vows. Did you know they were gonna do that?â
âNope. I knew Tyler was nervous before the start but that--pulling you up there--was all them in the moment.â
âI just canât believe it finally happened. My brother married the love of his life, my best friend joined our family like she was always meant to. It was-- I hope it was everything they wanted.â
âIt was, thanks to you.â
Tyler appeared at the back door, a bright smile on his face. He led Nicole by the hand out into the backyard, ignoring the glare Auri threw his way at their unannounced presence. That certainly wasnât part of the schedule either, they were supposed to be at the reception, not standing with her and Josh under fairy lights and the stars and discussing what did or didnât work during the ceremony.
Nicole released Tylerâs hand and pulled Auri away from Josh, a warm smile heightened her eyes as she wrapped her friend in a hug.
âWhat are you two doing here? You have guests, and Josh has a speech! And what about your dance?â
âDude, will you relax? The hard part is over and the party will still be there. But we want to take a moment to celebrate with the two people who made tonight possible,â Tyler said, pulling a loose strand of Auriâs hair and laughing when she swatted his hand away. âBesides, Nic has some things she wanted to say and we thought this would be the perfect time to do it, you know? When itâs just the four of us.â
âI meant what I said earlier about making promises to Ty that Iâd just be making to both of you, too.â Nicole looked at the couple in front of her, a soft smile tugged at the corner of her lips. âAuri, you went above and beyond tonight. I canât imagine how much time you put into all of this while helping us figure out how to bring a little of ourselves to the table, but you did it. Weâll never be able to thank you for everything youâve done tonight.â
Auri blushed. She hated being the center of attention; especially when it came to her work. Sure, she knew she was the best at her job, but there was a strong difference between confidence and cockiness.
She shook her head. âYou donât have to thank me, Nic. Youâre my best friend. And Ty, you-- You pretty much saved me when we were growing up. Iâd do anything for you.â
âWe know. And thatâs why we want to return the favour. Look, Aceâ--Tyler gestured around them at the decorations--âthis was the most magical evening of our lives and you did it on your own. This was better than we couldâve dreamed and you made it happen. But youâve been so focused on everyone else for so long that you hardly take the time to think about what you want.â
âYou and Josh deserve the best too, and youâve got us, always. Weâve had our night and we will never forget it. Now itâs your turn,â Nicole said smiling.
Josh held Auriâs left hand in his, thumb stroking over the back of her knuckles and the ring on her finger. He knew she would want to have a hand in planning and scheduling and everything she could until the end if he let her but hoped that sheâd accept Nicole and Tylerâs offer. It was her turn to plan the wedding she wanted but she didnât have to do it alone.
Nicoleâs eyes met her new sister-in-lawâs, and the warmth and love in them overflowed. And Auri knew somehow, that this had been their plan all along. âWe know this isnât your style, and we know perfect for you could be freakinâ City Hall for all you care as long as Josh is the one standing in that room. . .â
Tyler wrapped his arms around his wifeâs waist. He kissed the side of her head and looked down at the woman before him--she was his sister, in every way except blood. There was no other choice to be made but the one in front of them. âSo, what if you elope? Nic and I will act as witnesses, and if you really want to do something big to celebrate, we can throw a party later. But I know you, Auri, and I know you will never be happy with anything huge you or anyone else could come up with. Itâs not you, it never has been. And Josh? He just wants you. Itâs why youâve never stopped to think about what you want.â
They were right, all of them. Auri put so much of her time and energy into everyone else, so much of herself into her work, that she never considered what her perfect day looked like. It wasnât until Josh proposed almost a month ago that she even stopped to look at the idea of what could be, and each time she came up empty.
Maybe her perfect day, her dream, really was just her brother and sister and the man of her dreams.
âWell, what do you say, Ace?â
âHey, Dub? You wanna get married?â
Josh knew the morning of Tyler and Nicoleâs wedding that his life with Auri would be perfect because she existed in every aspect of it. He loved that he knew her like no one else could. The only thing left for him to do now was marry the girl he couldnât imagine life without.

A/N: first piece for Music Men of Summer Bandom Bingo (thatâs a mouthful), hosted by @bandombingo This is for a 5-part series, with inspiration for the entire story drawn from Like No One Does by Jake Scott. Iâve included the found family trope in this story because Iâm a sucker. Hope you like it!
From the moment he woke up, Josh knew today was the day.
Last night, when his head hit the pillow, when he pulled her close and breathed her in, when he kissed her temple and she snuggled close. . .Josh knew he was going to ask Auri to marry him. Theyâd been together for so long, too long, he knew everything about her and still wanted to know more, he craved those moments when he learned something new. Auri was everything.
As the sun rose, his mind wandered to the baby blue velvet box sitting within the drawer of their shared dresser. How heâd managed to hide it from her for so long, he didnât know. The ring he had made was perfect, he knew as much, and her brother--his best friend--confirmed it when he asked for his permission to propose to her. He knew exactly how he wanted to do it, what he wanted to say, how he wanted it to look. . .but his nerves kept him from doing so for months. Not anymore. He was done putting it off.
Auri spent her life planning everyone elseâs wedding. She even planned Tyler and Nicoleâs--they were going to have the wedding of their dreams, thanks to her. It was time she got around to planning her own, Josh would make sure of it.
He rolled over and tapped his phone screen as the alarm went off, not wanting to disturb the beautiful woman beside him. He carded his fingers through messy brown curls, and started up at the ceiling. The only sounds in the room were the faint in-and-out of Auriâs soft breathing, undisturbed by the break of day. Josh slowly crawled out of the covers, leaving her behind in the warm safety of their bed. She worked twice as hard as anyone else, she earned an extra hour or two.
He leaned over and pressed his lips to the apple of her right cheek, just beneath where long brown lashes kissed soft golden-brown skin; he often found himself jealous he could not do the same every second that passed by. How he loved her with everything in him. . .
â
Light footsteps down the stairs alerted Josh to Auriâs presence before he saw her. When she rounded the corner into the kitchen, she looked like a dream, finally awake for the day, though her hair was a mess. Josh was speechless--he was always speechless when he saw her--and humbled by the sight of his girlfriend.
âYouâre up,â he greeted lovingly, a warm smile adorning his face. He gripped the mug of coffee done to perfection the way she loved and stepped around the island in the centre of the kitchen. âHowâd you sleep?â
âOf course, I am. You didnât really think Iâd sleep that long once you left my side, did you?â Auriâs laughter was infectious and the smile on Joshâs face only grew. She set a stack of binders down on the counter and organized the folder of notes along with them. She knew what Nicole desired, what Tyler preferred, and how to compromise for both. If the local paper hadnât already hailed her Wedding Planner of the Year now, by the time she and Josh got Tyler and Nicole down the aisle, he was damn sure she would be. No one could do what Auri did.
âBesides,â she said, turning to look at him thoughtfully, âeveryone in this town knows Iâm the best wedding planner weâve got. So when you and Ty announced taking time off from touring so he and Nic can get married, I wasnât going to let just anyone swoop in and steal the biggest clients of the year.â
Josh laughed, handed her the large mug and pressed a kiss to her forehead. The unrivalled dedication to her work was beyond admirable; every day Josh found himself in awe of her, inspired by her.
âLike Nic would let âjust anyoneâ plan her wedding. Let alone her wedding to Tyler Joseph,â he teased.
Auri rolled her eyes; in them, Josh saw the sunlight and their future reflected at him in a swirl of brown and tiny, near-imperceptible flecks of gold. She smiled.
âBut thatâs exactly my point! Who better to plan the wedding for the frontman of Twenty One Pilots than his favourite little sister? Especially when heâs marrying my best friend?â Her excitement was contagious; he couldnât wait to feel that way about their special day.
Josh hummed, sitting on the barstool beside her. He picked up a binder; blue--navy: seating charts. He leafed through some of the pages, staring amazed at the attention to every single detail sheâd paid to the coupleâs requests. âYou finished the diagrams for the seating charts already. Hold on-- Babe, did you-- Are these hand-drawn seating charts?â
She raised an eyebrow. âYes. . .â she answered, unsure what the big deal was. Itâs not like it was hard to do when she had all the time in the world, she made her own schedule, worked whenever she wanted, and she was damn good at her job. âSo?â
But this Josh had planned for. He wanted the most important people in their lives to witness the moment everything changed, he wanted them to be a part of it. If not for them, he wouldnât be there. . .staring at this beautiful woman who had no idea how truly, utterly brilliant she was.
Josh and Auri met when Nicole and Tyler introduced them at a private gig in their hometown. Heâd heard so much about her from Tyler already--so much about this girl heâd grown up with who became family to him when she had no one else. Tyler and his brothers and sister were Auriâs brothers and sister, and thatâs all that mattered to them. Josh knew when they met that Auri was it, the missing beat in his drumline.
When Nicole met Josh, she knew he was the anchor Auriâs ship had been sailing without for far too long.
The couple watched from the living room; an array of moments stacked and swirled around the unsuspecting duo snuggled together at the kitchen island.
âDo you think heâs gonna do it?â Nicole asked her husband-to-be in a hushed whisper.
Tyler breathed in deep, shoving one hand in the pocket of his jeans and pulling Nicole to his side with the other. âIf I know Josh half as well as my sister does,â he said, nodding. âThis is the moment heâs been waiting for, he just needs to see what we know.â
Time stood still in that space within the kitchen. Pages of notes and scribbled ideas, doodles and sketches were laid out on the counter in organized chaos. This was her happy place, Josh knew. She loved making other peopleâs dreams come true and she was amazing at it, beyond compare. But what about her own? She deserved more, much more.
âSo--â Josh placed the charts he held back in the binder and pulled her to stand between his knees. He swept strands of wild dark brown curls away from her eyes with his fingertips. âTheyâre going to love you for this--all of it.â
âItâs just seating charts, Josh. No big.â She shrugged, wrapping her arms around his neck. She leaned her forehead against his, meeting his intense gaze--it burned like fire throughout her entire being. He was right, though, she would do anything to ensure Tyler and Nicole had the perfect day.
âYou are fucking perfect, you know that?â
âI know. You tell me every day.â
âAnd I will continue to tell you until the day die.â
She lived in his veins, in his lungs; she was in his blood, in his air. . .
Josh felt the ring burning a hole in his pocket, and knew the moment heâd been searching for was right here, right now. He closed his eyes and the question left his parted lips in a quiet murmur: âHey, Ace. . . Will you marry me?â
From the moment he woke up, Josh knew today was the day Auri would plan the start of the rest of their lives.
