Break Sessions with “Pros”
The Vineyard. What is the Vineyard? It’s a church, but on Tuesdays from 8-10 pm it’s an open space for breakers. It’s a nice practice area in U-District that doesn’t exclude non-UW students. Pretty awesome, right?! But... the people who practice at the Vineyard are REALLY good. So good that it can be intimidating. I’ve been to the Vineyard multiple times and I’ve seen so many “famous” b-boys. From local all-stars like Luna and Tim Chips to the whole Art of Movement crew [Jay Park was there randomly one time], you see some of the best Seattle has to offer at the Vineyard. So, it’s definitely no surprise that I felt like I wasn’t good enough to practice with all of them on the dance floor. Or well, I USED to feel that way. I’ve changed within the last two weeks. Thanks to some GREAT advice from some amazing dancers, I’ve learned to control my movement and dance to the music rather than to the people watching. It’s definitely all about going all out and dancing with a positive outlook of yourself rather than worrying about people having negative thoughts about your dancing.
Today was the first day I’ve danced at the Vineyard and left without feeling like I was out of place. I find it funny that it took me so long to realize that it doesn’t matter what others think of me. It matters what the music thinks of me. The music will only think I’m whack if I think I’m whack. So I won’t.
