Roger was walking the dogs. This was not anything particularly special. Roger was often found walking the dogs. Today he had Sonata and Sheharzad, a pair of females who got along quite well. They were more mild-mannered than rambunctious Sally and her brother Skipper, though Sonata was quite curious and often approached passerbyers and other animals Sheharzad, on the other hand, liked to sniff all sorts of objects and plants.

The walks with this particular pair of dogs were often long and rambly, but Roger did not mind. He needed to get out of the house, be out of doors. Ever since the incident at work, walls made him feel trapped, like someone was just around the corner, just out of sight, waiting to snake their cold hands around his neck.

He swallowed now, shaking his head.

At least in a wide open space, he could run.

But anyway, it was a nice day, only a few clouds in the sky, and Roger was whistling, as usual, and headed by the park. There was a man on the path walking towards them, and Roger nodded at him. Both of the dogs paused, turning their noses to the fellow. Roger chuckled.

“Seems they’ve both taken a liking to you,” he said. “That’s rare.”
