“When did Santa get so tiny?”

Pop Tate has seen a lot of weird things since opening his shop but not as much as seeing a 3 year old struggle to open the diner’s door.

The child was wearing a jumper and shorts that matched the colour of his messy raven hair, and in his chubby hands was a brown teddy bear. He tried pushing the door with his hands, and then his shoulder, until his frustrated eyes met with the old man’s.

Pop, seeing nobody coming to collect the kid, sprinted to take him in. The usual ring of the door echoed through the busy building and only when he had him in his arms did he see the tears on the child’s face.

“Hey there, little one,” Pop Tate cooed, trying to soothe him. “What are you doing here? Where are your parents?”

The boy sniffled and pointed at the far end of hall, right to where Betty Cooper and Jughead Jones were enjoying one of their lunch dates. Pop felt shivers down his spine but shook it off. ‘May be just a relative,’ he thought. ‘He does kind of look like Jug.’

Walking over to the couple’s table he set the boy down on the floor, which went unnoticed.

“Oh, hey, Pop!” Betty greeted him with a smile, looking away from her boyfriend who had a mouthful of fries. “Is everything alright?”

Before the man could reply, the kid whimpered, “Mama.” It caught the trio’s attention immediately.

“I wanna go home.” He continued and Betty slowly pointed at herself.

“I. . .is—is he talking to me?” She asked when he suddenly ran to climb on her lap and uttered his previous statement.

Jughead could only watch as everything unfolded.

“I’m sorry, there must be some kind of mistake,” Betty said, albeit carrying the child into a more comfortable position. “Can you—can you tell us your name, sweetie?”

The boy clutched her sweater. “Bax. . .Mama says my name is Forsythe Pen. . .Pendenton,” he struggled before continuing. “Jones, um, four. But mama and papa call me Baxter.”

Betty and Jughead could hear Pop slowly back away. As if the situation couldn’t get any more sinister, the blonde asked with a gulp, “Do. . .Do you perhaps know your parents’ names?”

“Ewizabeth and papa has my name but he’s three. Papa also calls you Betty, and you call him Jug,” Jughead choked while Betty just felt air being sucked out of her. “Why are you asking me your names? Is it quiz time?”
