If Life is a Game Then Treat Yourself Like a Videogame Character
I donât know about yâall but lately Iâve been thinking about life like a videogame and I think itâs working.Â
- Hanging out with a friend soon? Mana restored!
-Buying healthier food from the store? Max health increased!Â
-Managed a whole day/week/month without an anxiety attack? Level up!
-Folded your laundry but didnât have the energy to put it away? Is your health low? Does your character need sleep? When did your character eat? Is their thirst bar low?Â
-Is there a place you canât go to or something that seems unpassable? Thatâs okay, keep exploring, keep gathering tools and XP maybe youâll figure it out later.Â
-Want the good ending? Maybe purposefully choosing to be nice to the NPCs will help. Who knows where the plot of this game is going.Â
As someone who has a nice mix of anxiety, depression, and some trauma dashed in I know that every little help counts. Heck, buying nice smelling sensi wax and almond soap helps. Drinking more water didnât cure my depression, but it made me feel less sick. Buying a nice shirt for myself didnât cure my anxiety, but I felt less like a weirdo wearing clothes that Iâve had for six years.Â
This helped especially since I struggle with religious trauma. Life isnât controlled by an all knowing deity. When bad things happen sometimes I didnât deserve it.Â
Itâs time I took the controller back and played the game my way.Â

New necklace. I usually shun Etsy but this was a great find. It's the chemical compound for serotonin, the happy hormone because I need some positivity in my life. #personal #battlingdepression https://www.instagram.com/p/B1Y3mAuAFno/?igshid=1kpc2x4wane1t
So I just came out to my grandma as gay and she was a bit (a lot) disappointed. She kept saying that homosexuality is unnatural and how she feels bad for whatever child I might adopt. It.
As nice as it is to know exactly where I stand with my family, it also just makes things so much worse because it forces you to come to terms with things.
When I was in college my family encouraged me to date a guy who was thirty years older. Just because he was a dedicated christian.
They would rather I did that than marry the woman of my dreams.
When I came out to my grandma she straight up told me it would be better to live alone than to be with someone of the same gender.
When I came out I was told it was selfish. Because my parents wouldn't have grandkids. (And apparently it's cruel to raise a kid in a homosexual environment.)
When I came out as asexual I was told that I just hadn't found the right man.
Now my time with my little brothers is constantly monitored. Their faith in christianity is so strong that if I told them I didn't believe in god or that I was gay it would tear the family apart.
As much as I want to be respectful and understanding of their religious views is it really worth all the hiding? Is it worth the declining mental health?
Like. I want to tell them all about how happy I am now. I want them to be happy for me and how much I've grown. I want them to be proud of me for living on my own and getting a promotion and setting up a 401k and saving for college.
But it's just not the same.
I don't think I want to fly home for Christmas anymore.
Does anyone have any similar experiences? I have so many Christian friends, and so many people have amazing coming out stories (and I'm happy for them) but if y'all have advice it would really help your local gay disaster.

For all of those who are just leaving, or who are still stuck, or have left but still feel like they are being held back- I want you all to know that it does get better.Â
Once I started to heal from the trauma, it felt like I could walk again. And once I could walk, I walked more and more until I started running and jumping and skipping and dancing.Â
Then I realized I was finally going places. Maybe not super fast or far. But what the hell, I was finally getting somewhere.Â
Because, like, once you remove all of those weights you start to relax a bit. Itâs hard to explain, but in my personal experience, it really feels like I can finally get somewhere now that literally nothing is holding me back.Â
I went from having anxiety attacks and feeling suicidal constantly to pretty much fully recovered with my own place and a job promotion. I never thought I would live this long. I never thought I could mentally handling being in charge of six workers and running a shift by myself.Â
But it just took years of healing. The steps it took to get out, then to create my own space and find the right therapists and medication. The subtle validation when I realized that those things that happened were fucked up. It was wrong and I wasnât crazy or sensitive or weak.Â
Now, now that Iâm finally out of there and able to think a little clearer, I am realizing that I can listen to Beyonce music! I used to avoid her like the plague because sheâs (not) DeMoNiC. And then I realized that I can wear shoulder-less t-shirts. I can wear super thick eyeliner. I can flirt with girls or guys. I can stand up for myself when someone disrespects me. I can watch those Netflix shows my parents hated. I could go to a club if I wanted. I can try different alcohols. I can pursue being a firefighter if I wanted.Â
Thereâs probably so much more I can do without even realizing it.Â
It makes me tear up thinking about how far Iâve come. Iâm finally at a point where Iâm proud of myself for making it this far.Â
I always feel this sort of pang in my chest whenever Iâm told, âwow! youâre so friendly!â or âman, you have so many friends!â or âyouâre really outgoing.âÂ
Because yeah, I am now. But that is really only because I was Trained to be that way.Â
Back at my old church there is this class that every Sunday school kid, college student, leader, employee, and ministry worker takes. Itâs called something like, âFundamentals of SoulwinningâÂ
There, you learn how to approach people.Â
You see, my cult understood that you would get NOWHERE screaming at someone that they would go to hell. No. You have to be friendly, non-aggressive, and open to talking.Â
The only reason I can talk to any stranger about any topic is because I was taught how.Â
If you are knocking on their door, you have to first explain that you arenât selling anything. Maybe chuckle a bit, step back, put your hands up.Â
You then tell them, âIâm just in the neighborhood, inviting people to (an event that doesnât seem too religious) and I would like to give you one.Â
This even can really be anything. My cult does this âFriend Dayâ thing where they give out these bags of cookies with an invitation on it. This can also be something like âLove Works.â where you love bomb someone and then give them a tract (a card that is pretty to look at and has information about the church and stuff. Also the gospel)Â
Then, if they seem open you can keep going. They may even open their door all the way at this point.Â
You read that personâs body language to see if they are open to talking. Then you open with something like, âoh, do your (brightly colored) shoes make you run faster?â or âwow, I thought I was the only one who-âÂ
I remember taking a test about how you can always find something to talk to them about, something to break the ice an earn a sort of comradery.Â
Profession (many people are open about where they work)
Property (I always loved praising peopleâs outfit, makeup, flowers, wallet)
And something else beginning with a P (like personal)Â
You talk about the lawn ornaments, the car they have, the kids toys. You never bring up god in the beginning.Â
Then, as you talk, you say, âIâm sorry, what was your name again?â And (I have practiced this multiple times, it works unfortunately) 95% percent of the time they will tell you their name.Â
I remember my teacher then telling me that you use that name over and over again. Because they are more willing to participate in the conversation if you make them feel like they are the center of attention.Â
Then, as the conversation goes on (and you feel âlead of the lordâ) you gently steer the conversation towards things like, âoh! well hey, do you go to a church right now?â and then go from there.Â
If the person you are witnessing to opens up about a certain trauma then you are supposed to share your own experiences, and how the lord worked through you in that time.Â
It... itâs kinda scary because Iâve recently realized that not even salesmen use these tactics. Because they fucking work. My cult has over 5,000 people in the English speaking ministry, almost 2,000 for Spanish speaking, and then you have Korean, ASL, the bus ministry, the Sunday schools, the satellite churches that have 300 in average attendance, and the Livestream that is streamed all over the world.Â
Iâm not exaggerating.Â
So.Â
With that being said, do not be afraid to say, âIâm not interested.â And close the door in their face. (From experience, I can safely say that they donât take it personally or hate you for it. It happens all the time.) Itâs okay to give the tract back. Itâs okay to tell your friend âI will never be interested in religion so please do not invite me again.âÂ
I deeply regret witnessing to people. Especially at work. Especially to friends outside of my circle. I regret politely pointing out the fallacies in their own religions. I regret lying to people and telling them that jesus helped me through rough times.Â
Christianity especially is horrible because every time I thought âI shouldnât be doing this.â it could be brushed aside with âwell thatâs what Satan wants you to think. Satan wants your friend to suffer and burn in hell for all eternity. Youâre saving your friend/coworker/relative from that and giving them a change to live a happy life.â and Iâd go on witnessing with even greater ferocity.Â
But, now I have some hope for my future. Iâm not in that life anymore.
I can be happy for people when they open up to me about their religious success.
I can comfort people as an empathetic human when they share the rough times.
I can offer actual help instead of just saying âIâll pray for you.âÂ
I can be happy for someone when they tell me about a career advancement that isnât religious.Â
I can go to sleep not caring if I won enough souls. Or worrying about my friends dying and going to hell because I didnât witness to them.
I can make friends, and not feel fake or manipulative. I want to be their friend so that we can share things. Not because I want them to become a follower.Â
I can go about my day not having to pretend that Iâm okay because âsinners should see something different in you.âÂ
I can be comfortable around people who talk about âsinfulâ stuff. Yeah, youâre single and have a kid. Go you. You got this. Youâre fighting your smoking habit. Hell yeah, Iâm there for ya. You like drinking beer? You want to hang out a bar maybe? Iâm down. You want me to go with you to a rock concert? Oh my god yes!
Leaving religion was the hardest, but best decision of my life. The freedom is worth it. Please trust me on this. Give it a shot. Since I left, my anxiety is gone, my depression has slowly melted off, bit by bit. I have so much less stress.Â
I donât know. Iâve come so far. Thank you for reading. I feel so much better now that this is out there.Â
