“This was not part of the plan!” Kari ducked as a chair came for her head. Deflecting the fist that followed she twisted the perpetrator of the punch around just as another one came his way. He was hit in the jaw by Batoo and crumbled like shattered glass. She flashed a smile and laughed.
“Hey, my dad says plans are made for breaking!” Batoo turned, putting his back to Kari’s shoulder. The young Batarian grabbed the next guy who rushed in, pulling him off center, throwing them past his smaller body into Kari’s hip. She punched downward into their temple, and they hit the floor.
“Plans are supposed to help you know what to do.” She grunted reapplying her barrier just as someone tried to biotically lift her. She picked up the smashed chair looking for a target.
“That’s what training is for!” Batoo said then cried. “DUCK!” Kari crouched down as a whole table sailed overhead.
It was caught by Lach. “Stay down Pally!” The table went back the same way it had come, crashing back into the person who threw it.
She grunted as Lach came to her other side.
“Hey Pally, do you see Senna?”
In the dark lit bar that was currently a free for all, it was hard to see much of anything. She raised an arm as a bottle came their way. It shattered against her barriers.
“I dont see her, she might be down.”
“Shit. Are you sure?! Look for her scarf!” They all wore those. Red kerchiefs around their necks or arms. Their colors…
Kari grunted as she felt a fist that hit her barriers. Her eyes descend to find a small angry Batarian personally trying to break her barriers with repeated blows. She almost felt bad for the guy as she swatted him away.
“Hey I think I see her.”
“Walk us towards her!” Lach commanded. So she did. Slowly wading through the mire, over the broken objects, and fallen bodies. The people around them parted as she began grabbing combatants by their heads and pushing them out of their way, passing them back to Batoo and Lach who incapacitated them.
Senna and Vashti were back to back when they got there. Bloodied and beleaguered but still standing. “I think it’s time we made an exit.”
“You won’t hear any complaints from me.” Batoo replied.
They slowly made their way to the door Kari deflecting the debris that Lach didn’t catch and hurl back. Sometimes the objects were flung fast enough it reverberated through her barriers, and sometimes her barriers went down, making her and them stagger, but they all came out of the fight on their feet. She hurt from it, but Lach said it was a good hurt.
That’s what it meant to be alive.
They walked home laughing in triumph.
“The Red Skulls always.” Batoo said, and high fives her, jumping up to hit her hand. She smiled, enjoying the moment of comradery.
