“The ABC’s of The Joker” - M is for “Mad Love”: Harley Quinn appeared in several episodes with Joker in the animated show ‘Batman: The Animated Series’, but wasn’t given a full backstory until Paul Dini and Bruce Timm published the graphic novel “The Batman Adventures: Mad Love” in February 1994, set within the DC Animated continuity. After The Joker becomes annoyed with his sidekick/girlfriend Harley Quinn while he figures out a new plan to kill Batman, Joker kicks Harley out of their secret hideout. This makes Harley question how she got here and the readers are taken to a flashback. A young brilliant psychiatrist, Dr. Harleen Quinzel spends her internship at Arkham Asylum and her patient is none other than Joker, who reveals to her his troubled youth with his abusive father. Leaving her surprises in her office and giving her personal attention, Harleen begins to fall in love with Joker. More than anything, she feels she understands Joker’s behavior is all due to Batman and he shouldn’t be blamed for his actions. Once Batman brings Joker back to Arkham after an apparent escape beaten and bruised, Harleen snaps, runs out and gets costume and makeup, transforms into Harley Quinn and breaks the Joker out. Back to the present, Harley decides the only way to win Joker’s love is to kill Batman herself. Once she successfully traps Batman, he tells Harley that Joker has been manipulating her since they met, lying about his past so she would be sympathetic to his madness. Harley doesn’t want to believe him and tells him that Joker really loves her. But when Joker finds Harley and Batman, he is furious with Harley and knocks her through a window. After Batman and Joker duel with Batman victorious, Harley Quinn is bruised and broken in Arkham Asylum, stating she is done with Joker and her obsession. Yet when Joker leaves a 'Get Well Soon’ card, Harley falls in love with him all over again. The winner of the 1994 Eisner Award for Best Single Story, 'Mad Love’ illustrates Joker’s psychotic, self centered mind, Harley’s bruised and obsessive psyche, both bounded by their hatred and jealousy towards the Dark Knight who continually defines the drive of their relationship.
