Day of Valor ✨
Day of Valor, or Kagitingan Day, or Bataan Day, commemorates the bravery of Filipino soldiers and the fall of Bataan during World War II.
“On 9 April 1942, at high noon, major General Edward P. King, Jr., senior American officer on the battle-torn peninsula, surrendered the Bataan forces. The infamous death march began, an ordeal which annealed the Filipino spirit.
Let friend and foe recognize the martial spirit that defeat could not break. To the memory of these brave warriors whose blood soaked every rock of this land so that this nation might endure, this humble shrine is consecrated.” 📍 Mt. Samat National Shrine || Shrine of Valor

The Bataan Death March ensued on April 9th, 1942. Known as Bataan Day or Day of Valor, we remember the 75,000 Filipino and American prisoners of war who were tortured and forced to march 65 miles to prison camps. In honor of today, we visit the Filipino-American WWII Veterans Memorial in Lake Street Park in #HistoricFilipinotown. This is a piece of the first monument dedicated to our 250,000 Filipino and 7,000 Filipino-American soldiers who fought for the United States in WWII. The fight continues for Filipino veterans who survived the turmoil; their families are still seeking the benefits the U.S. promised to them for their military service. This monument is testament to the unrecognized history that will never be forgotten and the movement pushes forward.
