Did you read the prose story sequel to Ghostwatch, "31-10"?
I haven't yet. I know it's free to read online so I don't think finding it will be difficult. Something for me to get round to

The similarity I noticed between Lister and Rimmer is that they both have potential for great things if they get their heads out of their asses. Heck, look at Ace and Spanners. XD
Oh absolutely, though how they are stuck differs, with Lister not really having the drive to persue what he naturally excels in, while Rimmer keeps trying to aim for a goal he has no actual interest in. I could go on about how this links into their own traumas but we would be here all week.
With regards to your tags on my long-ass antiblackness in Red Dwarf reblog — I’ve been saying that I don’t think Lister is written as Black, so the majority of racism in how he’s written is simply negligence and cluelessness (ie they’re trying to be raceblind so they simply haven’t noticed that they’d have to write him any differently), and the in-universe racism he experiences as a character is an unintentional byproduct of the classism and Rimmer’s-nonspecific-pettiness he’s supposed to be experiencing. Part of my evidence for this is that, well, the Cat is what it looks like when those white writers are writing a Black character with the intention of writing a Black character, so there’s something to compare it to. Since the novels don’t mention the characters’ race at all (to the point of whitewashing if you’re the theoretical reader I decided to imagine who isn’t familiar with their actors; incidentally if I have to hear a dreadlock described as a “plait” one more time I shall scream), it’s possible to see the difference in their dialogue and characterisation there in a rawer way. Lister gets some clumsily-handled lines of internal monologue but at the very least reads like a person, whereas the Cat, no matter how hard one tries to picture someone who isn’t Black, still reads like a gay joke about Prince. And oh man, there are so many moments they’re onscreen together when it feels really weird because if a writer of colour had written them there’d be… something else I don’t fully know how to articulate. I’m glad you continued to bring up the books because they’ve been bothering me especially!
If I remember rightly, when they were working out the casting all the previous actors they considered before Craig were white, like I don't think they ever considered a non-white actor until Craig asked to try for the part. I totally agree that they hadn't originally written the character as black and continued to write Lister the same way even after the show started. The writers wanted to focus on the classism themes in the show but they lacked the skills to tackle how having a biracial working class protagonist meant that racism goes hand-in-hand with classism. It's always kinda perplexed me how in the show the future is free of racism but sexism, homophobia, classism and ableism still exist. It lacks intersectionality. In a way I understand, in that it must have been refreshing to the actors at the time to just play a part that doesn't feature overt racism but the show still needed to dedicate more character moments to make them just as fleshed out as the white characters.
I remember how the american cover for the first book whitewashed Lister and made cat into an actual furry but, considering the artist probably only had the book to work with, it's pretty damning about the lack of description for both of them in the novel.
As much as I loved the first book (BTL and Backwards are good but I won't be reading Last Human again) I do find the weakest aspect is Cat, again, as everyone else gets a chance to have some internal character exploration but the most we get with Cat is a more detailed description of the evolution of Felis Sapiens and a brief mention of his parents. We never get to see his inner thoughts. I know the writers were going for the idea of him being a cat and that's the big joke but if they could add depth to the three other main characters then they could have added more to him too. It's sad to me that the only other black main character, and the only one always intended to be played by a black actor, is given the least characterisation.
There's some really great moments of Lister and Cat interacting (I've always been fond of how they start just hanging out immediately in season 1) but I agree that there are times when they could have had better writing (I'm being reminded how disappointed I was that they really didn't talk much about the situation in Can of Worms when they're the only characters to have experienced pregnancy, plus the fact that in the latter half Cat gets sidelined in his only self-focused episode). There's a lot of great moments but also a lot of "If only"s.
The funniest thing to me about The Promised Land is that we see both Lister and Cat say that they care about Rimmer, in their own way, but when Kryten is asked if he likes him his head fucking breaks

Got the final travel ticket, which is to outer space, so naturally I knew who to give it to 🚀
The amount of joy this gave me is kinda ridiculous
Wasn't expecting to get jump-scared by Kryten and his yaoi hands today, but here we are
