Così si organizzò in concreto un programma che possiamo in succinto enunciare così: Per dieci anni, dal 1925 al 1935, Bartlebooth si sarebbe iniziato all’arte dell’acquerello. Per vent’anni, dal 1935 al 1955, avrebbe viaggiato in lungo e in largo, dipingendo, in ragione di un acquerello ogni quindici giorni, cinquecento marine dello stesso formato (65 x 50, o 50 x 64 standard) raffiguranti porti di mare. Appena finita, ciascuna di quelle marine sarebbe stata spedita a un artigiano specializzato (Gaspard Winckler) che incollandola su un foglio di legno sottile l’avrebbe tagliata in un puzzle di settecentocinquanta pezzi. Per vent’anni, dal 1955 al 1975, Bartlebooth, tornato in Francia, avrebbe ricomposto, nell’ordine, i puzzle così preparati, in ragione di nuovo, di un puzzle ogni quindici giorni. Via via che i puzzle sarebbero stati ricostruiti, le marine sarebbero state ristrutturate in modo da poterle scollare dal loro supporto, trasportare nel luogo stesso in cui – vent’anni prima – erano state dipinte, e immerse in una soluzione solvente da cui non sarebbe riemerso che un foglio di carta Whatman, vergine e intatto. Così, non sarebbe rimasta traccia alcuna di quella operazione che, per cinquant’anni, aveva completamente mobilitato il suo autore.
