Barry's a bit concerned about his place in Cisco's life with the sudden appearance of Hartley.
He's not super great at expressing this.
“Hey, are you alright? You’ve been acting really off lately.” Iris asked. She sat down on the couch next to Barry, nudging him a little. Joe had invited the STAR Labs team over for dinner and the sounds of Cisco instructing everyone made up the background noise in the house.
“Oh I’m fine,” Barry said with a smile. “Just a little tired. Where’s Wally?”
“He’s always running late, just like someone else I know.” Iris replied. Barry rolled his eyes and Iris nudged him with her shoulder. “Seriously though, I can tell when something is bothering you.”
“Iris,” Barry said with a sigh.
“Barry,” she mocked back.
“Fine,” Barry said. “It’s Cisco.”
“Cisco?” Iris repeated. “I don’t think he’s actually going to kill dad for having canned tomatoes,” She offered. Barry laughed.
“No, that’s not it. Lately…” Barry trailed off, taking another draw on his beer. Iris waited and he let out a short breath. “Okay, how about this — when was the first time you saw Wrath of Khan?”
“Uh,” Iris said, confused. “I’ve been friends with your nerdy ass forever, so… I think I was seven?”
“Cisco’s very tactile,” Barry said suddenly, setting down his beer. “He likes, like, hugs and patting people on the back, and high-fives, and touching people’s arms…”
“Barry, I’m a professional journalist I know what tactile means,” Iris said shortly, cutting him off. “If that’s what’s bugging you, you could just talk to him about it. I’m sure he’d give you space if you were uncomfortable.”
“No, that’s not it,” Barry said. He tapped a nervous pattern on his knees. “Okay, so, Cisco likes movies a lot. And the other night, the drive-in was doing an old Star Trek movie marathon we were going to go to. but I got called in on that case with the guy and the bears… anyway, I told Cisco and Caitlin to go on without me,” Barry said.
“Okay…” Iris said after Barry was quiet for a few seconds “… and they did?”
“Yeah, Barry said. “Which is good! Yeah, no, I’m glad they got to go. But when they were there, they ran into Hartley.”
“Oh! I haven’t seen Hartley in awhile, how’s he doing?” Iris asked.
“He’s fine,” Barry said, aware that his tone was a little off burn to able to stop it. “But he stopped by the lab the next day to help out with… something, I don’t even know what. Anyway, he and Cisco - and Caitlin, Caitlin too - were talking about the movie and he and Cisco kept exchanging quotes and —“
“Oh! Did they do the Wrath of Khan quote?” Iris asked. Eddie always said that the best way to get a kiss from a nerd was to quote that one line.”
“See, I didn’t know that!” Barry exclaimed, flushing.
“Didn’t know what?” Iris clarified.
“That… that the quote was universal nerd code for ‘Hey, I like you an d you should kiss me!’” Barry replied.
“How could you not know that?” Iris asked. “Even I know that!”
“I just didn’t!” Barry squeaked. “It’d never occurred to me, but then they were talking about it and Caitlin quoted the line at friggin’ Hartley, and he was all like ‘that’s sweet Cait, but I’m not into girls,” and they all laughed? But I didn’t get it so when I got back to work I Googled it and it’s like a big deal!” His hands were flailing, he couldn’t help it, but at least he could keep his voice down to a tense whisper.
“Barry, I feel like I’m missing a step here,” Iris said slowly. “Breathe.”
“Okay, Cisco and I have movie marathons all the time, and when we used to watch Wrath of Khan he would turn to me at the end and quote it,” Barry said. Iris’ eyebrows shot up, “An I didn’t think anything of it, because what did I know? But now I realize that may…”
“Mean he’s into you,” Iris finished. “And you’re afraid to talk to him about it?”
“Well, the last few times we’ve watched it,” Barry said, “He… well, he hasn’t quoted it.”
“Okay,” Iris said, head nodding as she worked her way through the tangent-laced story. “… and you - oh, you’re into him now but since he hasn’t space-proposed to you, that may be a sign that he’s not into you now?” Iris said.
“Barry this is ridiculous, go talk to him.”
“Okay, but see… uh, recently I may have inadvertently changed some things related to Hartley and since then, I’m int really… “
“You messed again with time travel again?” Iris demanded.
“Jeeze, you really do know me too well, and Shh!” Barry said, glancing around. He dropped his voice, “But yeah just a little bit. And, ah, I don’t really… know Hartley?”
“What do you mean?” Iris asked.
“I mean that before I… uh, made some touch decisions regrind Zoom preparation,” Barry said. “Hartley was not even a tiny bit associated with Team Flash. So I don’t know the man at all! I don’t know how long he’s been around, or if he goes on missions sometimes, who or what he does or doesn’t know, and how close he and Cisco may or may not be.”
“Oh!” Iris said. “Why not ask?”
“Because then I’ll have to explain who Hartley was before I meddled and I don’t know Hartley but I’m pretty sure he’s good now.”
“He wasn’t before?” Iris asked, eyes wide.
“See!” Barry whispered.
“What are you guys talking about?” Caitlin asked. Barry humped.
“Nothing!” he said with a wide smile. “Why? What’s happening? What are you… talking about?”
“I was going to let you know that the food’s almost ready,” Caitlin said. “Also I think Harry and Joe have officially bonded, and I kind of invited Hartley do you think that’s okay?”
“Of course,” Iris said. “The more the merrier. I was just telling Barry that it’s been awhile since I’ve seen Hartley.”
“Great,” Caitlin said. “He was being really passive aggressive about missing out on Cisco’s cooking. You know how he can get,” she added to Barry. Barry nodded with a grin.
“Oh yeah,” he replied. When Caitlin turned away he mouthed ‘help me’ at Iris.
—x—x—
“Hey Cisco, I keep forgetting to ask - are you seeing anyone?” Iris asked, casual as ever. Beside her, Barry barely managed to avoid choking on air. “Because there’s this editorial intern I work with who would be so cute with you.”
“Me? Nah,” Cisco replied. “I’m kind of interested in someone right now anyway, I wouldn’t be the best date material.” It was not Barry’s imagination that Cisco was very pointedly not looking at Hartley, was it? And Hartley was smirking at Cisco knowingly; Barry would definitely say that that was a knowing smirk.
“Excuse me for a second,” Barry said, shuffling to the kitchen as casually as possible so he could freak out in peace. “Just… going to grab another drink.”
“Hey, could you grab me some more iced tea?” Hartley asked.
“You got it, man!” Barry said. Either they weren’t in a ‘man’ pointing their friendship, or his voice was a little too loud because that got him some weird looks and Barry retreated to the kitchen before he could make it worse.
“What about you Hartley?” Iris asked.
“Oh no, there was this guy I met at Jitters last month, but —“
And then the kitchen door swung shut behind him and Barry took in a deep breath of the blessed, blessed, more-or-less quiet.
For about two seconds.
“Hey dude, you okay?” Cisco asked from behind him. Barry jumped.
“What? Yeah, man, I’m fine. Just a little tired. Why?”
“You forgot your glass,” Cisco said, eyebrows raised. “And Hartley’s.”
“Actually, Cisco, I wanted to ask you something about Hartley…” Barry started awkwardly, taking the glasses and setting them on the counter.
“Yes,” Cisco said. Barry froze. “Yeah, I vibes on the old past a few days after you got back.”
“Oh,” Barry said. “So you know that he — “
“Tried to kill you, and got really close to doing it?” Cisco clarified. “Yeah.” He sighed and crossed his arms.
“Uh. Want to talk about it?” Barry asked. Cisco glanced up and let out a surprised laugh.
“Isn’t that my line dude? You’re the one who almost died.”
“Well yeah but… I mean, that kind of happens to me a lot,” Barry pointed out. Cisco did not seem amused. “And anyway, yo have like months worth of non-bad memories involving the dude - gotta be different for you to suddenly vibe on the explosion and stuff.”
“Understatement,” Cisco said with a tilt of his head. “But also an overstatement — he’s a friend now, but at his core he’s still a smug asshole.”
“Yeah?” Barry asked. Cisco grinned.
“Yeah. He’s not my best friend or anything — only one lanky nerd has that honor.”
“You’re my best friend too, Cisco,” Barry said - touched and more than a bit relieved.
“Psh — ego much? I was talking about my old bud Ralph Dibney, but he did move after the whole particle accelerator thing so….” Cisco trailed off with a smirk.
“Rude,” Barry told him. Cisco laughed.
“Come on Boo, you know you’re the Kirk to my Bones,” Cisco said. Barry tried not to over thing that - not Spock?
“I thought Caitlin was Bones?” he pointed out.
“Fine, you’re the Kirk to my Scotty,” Cisco corrected with a fond smile. Barry took a fortifying breath, crossing his arms.
“Am I really Kirk though?” he said. “I always liked Uhura, maybe I could be Uhura.”
“Dude you have — Cisco started with a laugh before cutting off. He gave Barry a considering look, biting his lip. “Uhura huh?”
“Sure,” Barry said with a nervous shrug. “I don’t know that I could handle being Kirk without you on the comm as my Spock.”
It was quiet for a few beats - Cisco watching Barry and Barry trying his best to breathe like a normal human being.
“Barry,” Cisco said. “Are you… hitting on me?”
“Yes,” Barry said quietly.
“Oh thank God,” Cisco said, suddenly and loudly. “I’m going to kiss you now,” he told Barry. Then he grabbed his collar and pulled him down into a searing kiss, backing him into the island. Barry grinned into the loss and shifted, turning them around and lifting Cisco onto the bar.
“Show off,” Cisco breathed in between kisses.
“— oh!” Caitlin exclaimed suddenly. They broke apart, Barry twisting around. Caitlin had just walked into the kitchen and now everyone at the table was peering into the doorway behind her.
“You animals!” Joe called, “I cook on that island!”
“I guess I’ll stick with water!” Hartley added with a wide smirk. Barry turned back around, burying his face in Cisco’s shoulder.
“Hey Caitlin - think you could close the door?” Cisco asked, voice casual. Was that the sound of a camera phone Barry heard?
“Right, sure,” Caitlin said, and there was the sound of her shuffling out of the kitchen with the door swinging behind her.
“We should probably go back out,” Cisco said after a beat. Barry leaned back to look at him again.
“They can wait,” he said with a grin. Cisco laughed and leaned in for another kiss.
Cisco Ramon didn’t know Barry Allen before he was struck by lightning, but 9 months of a physical manifestation of his guilt can really get a guy thinking.
(Barry was in a coma N I N E M O N T H S and sometimes I feel like the Flash writers for get that, so here’s Cisco ruminating on Barry Allen and the things he makes Cisco feel even before they really meet.)
((this is really really rough just an exercise to get me typing so there’s going to be a lot of errors and awkward moments but I just wanted to post it so here’s your warning.))
Cisco Ramon was a man at home with his feelings, and he knew that Barry Allen brought those out in the extremes.
Guilt. A bone-deep guilt upon seeing him for the first time. Doctor Wells had asked Cisco to pump up some health monitors for a patient, so it’s not like he didn’t know what to expect, but the first time Caitlin and he had visited Barry Allen’s hospital bed - Wells waving them ahead while he waited for the family - he was in the middle of a seizure.
It had been two weeks since his admittance, but Barry still had an ugly burn mark on his hand, and it was shown in sharp relief against his pale pale skin as his whole body shuddered.
So yeah, the guilt. Cisco was familiar with guilt by that point - Seeing Caitlin drop the walkie, hearing the number of casualties on the news grow, all of the memorials he had gone to…. guilt, yeah, it was apart of him now. But it was a lot different to actually see someone actively suffering because of something Cisco had made.
That guilt was followed by relief. Once they moved Barry Allen to the S.T.A.R. Labs hastily - but expertly — assembled medical bay, his seizures gradually lessened in severity and then stopped entirely.
The night marking the first full week that Barry Allen went without shorting out a machine or sending them all into a panic with a seizure, Cisco went home and cried for like an hour.
It was friggin’ embarrassing.
After that it was basically seven months of a lingering fear. He researched Barry Allen: a man who was tagged in no less than 27 pictures by one Iris West eating different pizza each time; a man who had two public spotifies for modern rock and one private spotify made up solely of Lady Gaga. Barry had skipped the 8th grade, was a CI valued enough to have private lab space, had perpetual late issues, and had a blog dedicated to a bunch of weird and bizarre occurrences.
Sadness, too, was in play. Barry was in a coma - of course it was going to be sad. Still, Cisco was surprised how much it hurt when he’d see Barry’s hand twitch, or when he’d come in in the morning and see Barry’s dad asleep in the chair next to his bed.
One time after an Iris visit, Cisco was hunting through the room for his iPod and found the Central City Stars calendar from Barry’s nightstand torn up in the trash; a quick calculation told him that Barry had been unconscious for exactly 150 days. Cisco was startled to realize his eyes were damp.
“You’re not supposed to get too attached your your patients,” Caitlin told him when he brought it up, “but it happens sometimes.”
“He’s not my patient,” Cisco pointed out. Caitlin shrugged, putting Barry’s arm back down after a blood draw.
“He sort of is,” she said, arching an eyebrow as Cisco tucked the arm back under the blanket.
Fully-concious Barry would prove to bring all sort of emotions with him, but the last feeling that comatose Barry Allen brought to Cisco was terror.
“I have some great workout music ready for his stretches,” Cisco said, helping Caitlin move Barry from under the blankets. She glanced at him doubt clear in those eyebrows of her. Feeling the need to be dramatic, Cisco raised the remote as high in the air as he could and pressed play to start Poker Face.
“Like you don’t know all the lyrics,” he relied. Caitlin sighed.
“What are you doing?” she asked.
“He likes this song,” Cisco informed her. He slipped the remote back in his pocket and pulled out a Twizzler.
“How would you possibly know that?” Caitlin asked. Cisco shrugged, walking back over to his desk.
“I looked at his Facebook page,” he replied. He could practically hear Caitlin roll her eyes as she walked over to grab her charts.
Then Barry sat straight up with a gasp and Cisco lost an approximate 6 years from his life in shock.
Following that was a giddy sense of relief. Barry was alive! Alive, awake, cognizant, and seemingly no worse for wear (which was weird but Cisco would worry about that later). Cisco kept having to touch Barry’s arm, shoulder, back, just to hear his heartbeat through his skin - fast, too, for the record (probably because Caitlin kept poking him and Cisco kept touching him).
“Holy Shit,” Cisco breathed after Barry left with Doctor Wells for the tour of destruction.
“It doesn’t make any sense,” Caitlin said. “There don’t seem to be any ill effects.”
“Well, once they get back you can inspect him to your heart’s content,” Cisco said. He was making a real effort to make his voice calm even though he really just wanted to freak out a little more.
FlashVibe Flower Shop AU
because you always need a flowershop au.
anyway, this is just a ramble I have so far
The first thing Cisco thinks of when he thinks of flowers is the charming little florist
‘West Floral’ on 12th street by the police HQ. It was where Ronnie and Caitlin went for their wedding flowers, for one. For the other it was the flower shop that became famous around town for donating hundreds - if not thousands - of dollars worth of flowers to he wave of funerals that followed the explosion.
(There was a news story about it. But to be honest Cisco had gone to every single one of those funerals and seen it for himself.)
A few months layer, there had been another news story about West Floral. This time because the owner’s son woke up from his coma. (a coma also caused by the particle accelerator).
He’d liked Joe when he had met him as part of the wedding party, ad he still liked him - but it was pretty dampened by guilt too, as was everything Cisco felt now days.
Point is, when he and Dante had put together the idea for their mom’s 50th birthday, West Floral is where they went.
Cisco hadn’t been inside the shop since planning for the wedding, but it was just the same as he remembered. On the small side with wide windows and an incredible assortment of flowerers. There was a beautiful garden in the back - Joe sold fresh produce at Farmer’s Markets, and he had little classes at the beginning of Spring for kids to come in and learn about plants - and Cisco could hear people back there.
“Hello?” Dante called. Shortly, Joe came striding in from the back, hanging up his dirty apron on a hook next to some others an a bright red cane.
“So sorry gentlemen, didn’t hear the bell. How can I help you?” Joe asked, pulling off his gloves.
“We were - “ Dante started.
“Hey - Cisco, right?” Joe said, noticing him. “How are you doing?”
“Good,” Cisco replied, surprised, “I’m fine.”
“How’s Caitlin?” Joe asked, quieter this time.
“She’s…” Cisco paused. The last time Joe would have seen Caitlin, he assumed, would have to have been at Ronnie’s funeral (Cisco pushed down the part of his brain that screamed about it being an empty casket). “She’s better,” he decided on. Joe nodded.
“I’m glad,” he said. “So what can I help you with?”
“Our mother’s birthday is coming up,” Dante said. “We were hoping to convert our old rooftop terrace into a relaxing garden for her.”
“That sounds like a hell of a gift,” Joe said, eyes lighting up. “We’ve worked on a few similar projects, let me see if I can find…” he motioned for them to join him at the counter as he walked over and started pulling some folders out from underneath the register.
It was a few minutes later - wrapping up a discussion on their mother’s favorite flowers - that the phone rang.
“Barry can you get that?” he called.
“Got it!”a voice called back. Cisco tried to get a glimpse of the figure who walked in through the back and over to the office, but all he got was ’brown hair’.
“Don’t run!” Joe added.
“I’m fine Joe,” Barry replied.
“Alright, so I’ll just need to take down some information,” Joe started. They went through the names, addresses, phone numbers.
“Joe, it’s Dan Polson, and he’s asking for you.” Barry said, leaning from the office doorway.
Freckles. The guy had a ton of adorable freckles. He was cute - way healthier looking than he had in the news story after he first woke up, though he had noticeable dark bruises under his eyes. (Said eyes were beautiful by the way, Cisco’s brain offered)
“Great,” Joe muttered. He turned to walk to the office. “Barry, can you set up an assessment appointment for these guys?”
“No problem,” Barry replied brightly, passing off the phone and walking over.
(he was tall too, Cisco’s brain added)
“Alright,” Barry said, tapping his hands against the counter as he read over Joe’s notes. “A terrace, huh? Nice. We’ll just need to come in and measure the space and get a feel for it - see what types of plants will work best. What day would be good for you guys?”
“I’m Cisco!” Cisco blurted out. “Cisco Ramon. This is my brother Dante.”
“I’m Barry Allen, nice to meet you,” Barry replied with a smile.
“I have a concert Thursday,” Dante muttered. Barry pulled out his phone, tapping through it - Cisco couldn’t help noticing how his hands shook.
“Weather would be best on Thursday or Friday,” he offered.
“Mom’s at the house all day on Fridays,” Cisco said. Dante nodded and Cisco snapped. “But! what if you took her with you to your concert? It’s during the day, right?”
“At two, yes,” Dante said.
“Then I’ll show them the terrace while you’re out and mom’ll never know.”
“That would work,” Dante said with a nod.
“Oh, what sort of concert?” Barry asked.
“I’m a pianist,” Dante said. Cisco was fairly sure his brother didn’t mean to, but every time he said that he puffed himself up a little like a proud bird. Cisco was almost positive he saw a bit-back grin on Barry’s face.
“So, Thursday at 2. At this address?” Barry clarified.
“Yes, that will do. If you’ll excuse me I have to get to rehearsal,” Dante said. He nodded at Barry before leaving.
“Thursday will be great,” Cisco said. He went on his toes to lean over the counter to check the address. “And yeah, that’s the one.”
“— one, yes Dan — one second,” Joe was saying, ducking out of the office. He held the phone to the side and passed a small bouquet over to Cisco. “Give these to Caitlin with a hello for me,” he said before going back into the office after Cisco nodded.
“I guess I’ll…” Cisco started his goodbye but noticed Barry’s gaze on the bouquet, and a frown. “what?” he asked, looking at them himself.
“Wha - ? Oh, nothing!” Barry said, going a bit pink. “I was just trying to place the flowers, I don’t think I’ve seen that combo before.”
“Well by all means,” Cisco said. he tilted it so the blooms were facing Barry.
“A little Hawthorn, a Helenium - oh, Hyacinth hug. Magnolia and Myrtle, and - oh.” Barry was muttering to himself so quickly that Cisco wasn’t sure he was aware he was doing it. It was impressive.
“What?” Cisco asked.
“No, I just… I figured t out is all,” Barry said, shaking his head.
“Well I should go,” Cisco said. “Uh - I’ll see you Thursday?”
“Right! Thursday,” Barry repeated. They smiled at each other before Cisco pulled himself out of it.
“Right, see you,” he said, shuffling out before he could embarrass himself further.
x
“Did you get the appointment set up for the Ramons?” Joe asked about two hours, 17 customers, and one long phone call later.
“Yeah - Thursday,” Barry replied, adjusting the bouquet wall.
“Thursday?” Joe repeated. “Oh no we’ll need to call them, I can’t do Thursday I have - “
“I can do it,” Barry said with a shrug. Joe frowned at him and Barry sighed. “Joe.”
“Barry,” Joe replied in the same tone. “You know you - “
“It’ll take an hour tops, I’ll rest and eat beforehand and I’ll be fine Joe!” Barry insisted.
They had a beat of a staring contest.
“Okay,” Joe said. “But you take your cane, and you call my or Iris if you need us - got it?”
“Got it,” Barry said. He rubbed at his eyes. “I’m going to go sit down for a second.”
“Grab a protein bar from the back,” Joe said sternly.

This is what I’ve been doing at work: Cisco/Barry AUs
Cisco is playing the guitar and singing at Jitters’ open mic night and Barry needs that guy’s number like right now.
Cisco and Barry both made it to college early so the administration figures may as well make them roommates. Sciency shenanigans ensue.
Barry and Cisco work alternating shifts at a call center in the same cube. They leave little post-it notes and messages for one another. They haven’t met... yet but Barry just might be switching to the day shift.
Iris and Joe get Barry a private tour of STAR labs for his birthday; but the incredibly handsome, funny, and intelligent engineer filling in for the tour guide is just as fascinating as the lab itself.
Barry’s been in love with Iris just about forever, so he’s sure as hell not showing up to her engagement party alone. Luckily, this guy he knows named Cisco sort of owes him a favor...
Wally has come to the conclusion that Cisco and Barry are dating. After a continued series of misunderstandings they roll with it to hide The Flash secret.
Barry’s constantly calling the helpdesk for the most random of computer issues... because he’s bad with technology, not at all because he loves finding an excuse to spend time with Cisco, the office’s cute IT guy.
