When you travel, remember that a foreign country or even a different city is not designed to make you comfortable. It is designed to make its own people comfortable. 🌎 I still have so many photos I want to post from my visit to #Utqiagvik (formerly Barrow), Alaska. The problem is, the whole experience left me wondering how the heck I was gonna adequately talk about it on here. ⠀⠀ It’s just so culturally different! I’ve never felt more foreign in the very country I hold a passport to. ⠀⠀ I wanna represent the Iñupiat and Arctic lifestyle with appreciation and thoughtful wonder — and without misconceptions or judgement (see my subsistence whaling post which stirred up quite the convo across my social media platforms). ⠀⠀ Anyway, this is a pretty common yard on the #NorthSlope. It’s not exactly @hgtv worthy, but when you’re living in a town that no roads lead to, you don’t always have easy or cheap options of disposing your trash. Have you ever had your luggage lost while traveling? ⠀⠀ Have you ever showed up to the Arctic to find your suitcase isn’t there. Your suitcase that you packed all your warm winter clothing in...🥶 23° F with snow flurries and all I had was a sweater and jeans. ⠀⠀ SO lucky that when I arrived to my hotel 20 minutes later, the airport contacted me saying my luggage finally appeared! ⠀⠀ It turned out that a girl with the same last name as me AND the same first initial was on my 2nd of 4 flights (crazy right?!) and her bag was mistakenly tagged with MY phone number and email! ⠀⠀ So when I showed up in Utqiagvik, the @alaskaair Rep was like “I don’t see it here either, let me check on my computer.....Philadelphia?!” 😧 Insert jaw drop here. ⠀⠀ When they contacted me later in my hotel, I half expected to show up to the airport to find this other girls bag instead. I was praying she had packed for a winter destination cuz I was totally gonna steal her jacket for the day. But lawd have mercy it was mine afterall. ⠀⠀ LESSON LEARNED (actually it’s a lesson I already knew but decided to ignore on this trip) : Wear and/or pack the clothing you know you’ll need as soon as you land IN.YOUR.CARRYON. ⠀⠀ Also, to whoever the other J Sheehan was, I really hope you eventually got your luggage back.
